As a proud Military Veteran, I want to take this moment on Veteran's Day to honor the 18 million living U.S. military veterans. These exceptional men and women, representing roughly 5% of the U.S. population, are part of an elite and selfless group who willingly volunteered to step into harm’s way so others could remain safe. Veterans come from every background, each bringing a unique set of experiences, strengths, and perspectives shaped by service and sacrifice. They volunteered to put duty above self, and in doing so, they gave the rest of us the freedom to pursue our careers, raise our families, and live our lives. When they transitioned back into civilian life, many of them faced, and in some cases continue to face, new sets of challenges—the cultural shift to Corporate America. Navigating the language of business, adjusting to new workplace dynamics, and building professional networks are hurdles they know all too well. It’s not always easy, and it’s not always seamless. Today, let’s not only thank Veterans for their service but recognize the dedication they bring to every role they take on and the responsibility we have to help them make a full and healthy transition. Let’s support Veterans as they continue to grow, adapt, and lead in the business world—because the qualities that made them outstanding service members make them invaluable colleagues, mentors, and leaders in every industry. It's truly heartening (really) to know there are Employers fully supporting our veterans with employment opportunities. Though, this should be a given shouldn't it? Shouldn't all employers do this and be this? I do wonder given our fast paced inclusive focused, diverse, neurodivergent, authentic self evolving world, if the language and positioning around this support needs updating to reflect the talents and skills that veterans bring to teams and organisations. In most cases veterans are neither disabled nor less than anyone else and are often more resilient, organised and focussed than much of the population, having had discipline and structure as their daily foundation, in some cases for many years if not decades. So should companies supporting ex military personnel in to employment could do with a repositioning project? Perhaps the question to all employers is how many veterans do you employ? Rather than, will you commit to giving a fair opportunity of employment to our veterans? The intent is great, however, perhaps a bit behind the times and language based around equal opportunities legislation rather than society and authentic inclusive ideals? #Veterans #ArmyCovenant

We prepare recruits for the military, but how do we prepare veterans for civilian life/ the workplace? Veterans have a lot of skills and experience that can be valuable in the workplace, but it’s not always easy for them to make the transition. It has to start with businesses stepping up to create opportunities and showing genuine gratitude for people in the military.

Eleven09 Day, celebrated on November 9th, honors veterans transitioning from military to civilian life. Established in memory of six soldiers who sacrificed their lives during an ambush in Afghanistan on November 9, 2007, this day recognizes veterans' contributions in the workplace and encourages businesses to foster inclusive hiring practices. Here is a thought I had regarding #veteran employment.... The #military invests years and significant resources transforming service members' mindsets, behaviors, and capabilities from those they had before service. Rather than reverting to civilian approaches in job searching, companies should learn to recognize and value veterans' unique leadership abilities, operational experience, and specialized skills gained through military service. Instead of asking veterans to downplay their military background, we should help them showcase how their service makes them exceptional candidates who bring distinct advantages to civilian roles, and not put them through the same application process.
