Here is a summary of the past, present and future of the US Navy #aircraftcarrier: Past: - The first U.S. aircraft carrier, USS Langley, was commissioned in 1922 after being converted from a collier. It was used to experiment with and develop aircraft carrier operations. - Key pre-WWII developments included the introduction of islands on carriers Lexington and Saratoga to manage exhaust and the building of USS Ranger as the first carrier designed from the keel up. - WWII saw the evolution of armored flight decks, starting with the Essex-class, to protect against bombing and kamikaze attacks. The Midway-class further improved armor protection after the war. Present: - 10 Nimitz-class nuclear-powered supercarriers are the current backbone of the carrier fleet. Commissioned from 1975-2009, they feature an angled flight deck, steam catapults, and advanced radar and defensive systems. - The lead ship of the new Ford-class, USS Gerald R. Ford, joined the fleet in 2017. Key innovations include electromagnetic catapults (#EMALS), advanced arresting gear (#AAG), a redesigned island, and greatly increased #electricalpower generation. THE MDTF BEGINS TO COME OF AGE: As the pivot to the Pacific becomes more and more mature, the U.S. Army continues to try and provide relavent forces and capabilities for use in the Indo-Pacific. The foundation of those facilities was the Multi-Domain Task Force focused on long range kinetic and non-kinetic fires. The article below demonstrates that the MDTF is becoming a real organization with real capabilities for use in the Pacific. Below, the MDTF used the Army's next generation precision strike missile (PRSM) to engage a moving maritime target hundreds of miles away leveraging both UAS and High Altitude Baloon sensing and communications. This is definately a step in the right direction, especially with the lessons from the Ukrainian war against the Russian Black Sea Fleet all from land based forces. While this is a great step forward, it is only what should be a first step as 650km does not get you a lot of influence in the Indo-Pacific, or even in the South China Sea. Now that the American missile and rocket industry has re-emerged in the 21st Century to support the space race, the demand signal for increased missil performance from both the Sentenal program and the other military contracts should provide much greater ranges for those land-based fires. #mdtf #armymissiles https://lnkd.in/grsAJ44Z

Among defense analysts, there is?a general consensus?that if Taiwan could become a “porcupine”—bristling sharp spines—deterrence could be strengthened, and peace and stability maintained. Some have argued that new indigenous Taiwanese submarines, to replace the aging ones sold by the US in the past, would support this effort. In this piece, Dr. Jared McKinney at AWC and Maj Reiss Oltman at USAF Air Command and Staff College argue that while this may sound good in theory, the cost ($8.9 billion), timeline for completion (2038), and likely relative utility of the subs does not make sense. Instead of building 8 large conventional submarines, they argue a better move would be to learn lessons from how Ukraine has sunk Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and build an “anti-navy.” Taiwan has its own midget sub program, and it could produce 40+ of these, along with 100s of unmanned surface vessels and unmanned underwater vehicles for the price of its?currently-planned?8 submarines.
