After a longggg hiatus, it feels great to be back on track. Last Monday marked my first-ever Frank Morton event, and I'm thrilled to represent IChemE National Early Careers Committee UK&I partnering with Steven Gasser EngTech FIMechE! Throughout the day, I met individuals brimming with enthusiasm, many of whom shared similar starting points to mine. Common questions revolved around navigating the early years of university: "What should I do in my first year?" or "As a third or fourth-year student, should I pursue a year in industry or settle for summer placements?" As someone who was recently in their shoes, I believe that simply asking these questions reflects a passion for growth. Here's my take: 1. For First-Year Students: Dive headfirst into conferences, events, networking opportunities, and social gatherings. Build a global network of friends and attend sharing sessions led by individuals at every stage of their careers, from recent graduates to chartered engineers. The more you explore and connect, the richer your experience will be. Spend your four years absorbing insights and forging connections, and you'll be well-prepared for whatever comes next. 2. Regarding Third/ Fourth-Year Choices: I'm a firm believer in the power of hands-on experience. If you have the chance to take on placements, seize them eagerly. And if you're fortunate enough to secure a year-long industrial placement, embrace it wholeheartedly. There's no substitute for immersing yourself in an industry and gaining firsthand exposure. Embrace opportunities beyond your comfort zone—you'll find they're worth the leap!!! In essence, whether you're just starting out or nearing graduation, embrace every opportunity to learn, grow, and expand your horizons. Your journey is what you make of it, so make it count.
