Each individual who walks through our doors brings with them a unique story, a set of symptoms, and a personal journey towards healing. It is our responsibility, as healthcare providers, to approach every patient scenario with a renewed sense of curiosity, empathy, and openness. When we look at each patient with a fresh set of eyes, we create space for discovery and innovation. No two cases are exactly alike, and by remaining open to new possibilities and alternative perspectives, we can uncover solutions that may have previously gone unnoticed. Every patient encounter is an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to push the boundaries of our understanding. In the fast-paced world of medicine, it can be easy to fall into routine or to rely on past experiences to guide our decisions. However, by consciously choosing to approach each patient scenario with fresh eyes and an empathetic heart, we breathe new life into our practice. Interesting read in The Wall Street Journal about physician generation gaps and their differing perspectives on the profession - a higher calling or a job like any other? What I have observed throughout my medical career, and more recently as a physician entrepreneur at Phairify, is that learned helplessness is rampant among physicians. Docs are acutely aware of the undesirable situations they find themselves in as employees or practice owners, but we seem unable to organize to affect positive change. Transparency in physician compensation, rational work productivity targets, reasonable valuation of essential but potentially non-revenue generating activities (i.e., leadership, teaching, and research), and an inefficient and unnecessarily expensive healthcare job marketplace all take their toll. Why should you care? These conditions directly and indirectly impact patient safety, quality of care, and access to care. If you don't think so, spend a day with a hospital or health system chief quality officer digging into measures of patient safety or the patient experience. If nothing changes, nothing changes, and I humbly submit what needs to change is our collective thinking that someone else is going to solve our problems for us. We may share these problems with those driving the business of medicine, but the outcomes impact us differently, and we do not share the sense of urgency to fix them. https://lnkd.in/equbmaf7

Have you seen the life of a doctor? Sitting in a room, patient in and patient out. The cycle keeps going on and on. This couldn’t be further from the truth! As part of my course, I had the privilege of shadowing a doctor at one of the best hospitals in the USA: Weill Cornell Medicine. I shadowed an adult internal medicine doctor and discovered there was so much to learn. A doctor must not only gather the information needed for an accurate diagnosis but also address the emotional needs of the patient. Patients in the emergency department are often overwhelmed with emotions, sharing an abundance of information, some of which is not directly relevant. In addition, doctors need to communicate effectively and stay informed about all other treatments the patient is receiving. This coordination is vital to comprehensive patient care. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. Admin challenges, difficult conversations, critical decisions, and balancing personal life are all part of a doctor’s daily reality. This experience reshaped my understanding of the profession. Behind each patient’s chart lies a symphony of real-time decision-making, multi-tasking, empathy, and teamwork. The human element of healthcare—the moments between appointments, the pauses to reassure a worried family member, the urgency of responding to an incoming call—is what makes medicine both demanding and deeply rewarding. The Unexpected Joys of Medical Practice In healthcare, we often encounter situations that challenge both our knowledge and intuition. I recently shared a personal experience on Medium that taught me a profound lesson about the balance between clinical expertise and human empathy. A mother of four came to me with abdominal complaints, and during the examination, I felt something surprising—a baby. Despite her certainty that she wasn’t pregnant, I gently suggested she get an echography. Months later, she returned with a beautiful baby in her arms, reminding me of the unpredictable and joyful nature of our work.This experience underscored the importance of patience, trust, and humility in healthcare. 6 years ago I began my career as a patient services coordinator. I took the idea of Director of First Impressions seriously and tried to make every patient that walked in the door feel seen and known - something that the therapists emphasized early on as being important and a differentiator. The intention was to get to know them for more than just their diagnosis, helping us as therapists understand their “why” for coming in. I took a cancelation call from a patient who we see regularly and didn’t think much of it. A few hours later the patient called back with slurred speech, expressing their appreciation for us and that they wouldn’t be needing our services any more. Something within me told me to keep the patient on the phone and get a therapist to come up front. Things quickly escalated to a crisis call as the patient let me know we were the only people who loved them and cared for them and that they would no longer be with us after the call. While I kept the patient on the phone, the therapist was able to coordinate with first responders to get the appropriate resources to the patient’s home. The patient finally worked up the resolve to hang up with me, not realizing that first responders were about to kick in their door and save their life. I share this story to every practice owner and clinician out there feeling downtrodden and overwhelmed. You are making a difference in the patients’ lives and you don’t have to be the only one to share that burden. Surround yourself with a team who are a force for the greater good of your patients and practice. You never know when you’re the only person they see multiple times a week - your team is the closest thing to family they may have. Comment below other stories of impact!

Sometimes life takes us on unexpected paths, and my journey is a perfect example of that. Due to a long-term health condition, I’ve spent the last ten years mostly at home, with frequent visits to the hospital. What might seem like a setback turned out to be something more, an eye-opening experience that introduced me to the world of medicine. While I’m not a medical expert, I’ve developed a deep admiration for the dedication and intellect of healthcare professionals. The more time I spent in hospitals, the more fascinated I became with the work they do. From the iconic white coat to the meaningful patient care, it all sparked a passion in me that I never anticipated. Ten years at home, countless hospital visits, and one unexpected discovery: a growing interest in the medical field. It’s incredible how life’s challenges can reveal new passions.
