And, just as I am taking off on vacation, here's s little surprise that has been in the making for the past few months.
I have been part of the Latinx Professionals?board for a couple of years, and when Rafael Maga?a and Diana Kleps approached me with the idea, my response was an enthusiastic "Yes!".
The not-for-profit space can be extremely rewarding, while at the same time significantly challenging. I have been working over the past weeks on learning more from other leaders in the space and understanding how I can make a dent in the universe with this opportunity.
A few core principles that will be the main focus of my tenure:
-Latinx is a misunderstood term. Misunderstanding generates rejection. Education on what this means -and the exploration of how similar terms continue to evolve needs to be at the front center of the effort.
-Any not-for-profit "product" has 3 clients that need to be serviced: the sponsors, the recipients of the volunteer effort, and the volunteers themselves. Any sustainable effort needs to be able to articulate -and deliver- value to all these audiences.
-I do not identify as a Latinx myself, but I am an ally and I will fight to defend the right of other people to identify as Latinx. I will make it part of my tenure's purpose to identify the next leader of the organization, with a special focus on finding and mentoring someone who DOES identify as Latinx.
If you're interested in being part of this movement, as a sponsor, a volunteer, a future leader, or a follower, I urge you to follow us on Linked In and reach out to me with a private message expressing your interest.
We need more Latinos, Latinas, and Latinx to find their place in the spotlight.
?? Help me amplify their voices. Ayúdenme a amplificar sus voces. ??
