Performance vs Trust: How to Choose the Right People for Your Team I stumbled upon this video, while I was going through performance and trust matrix this morning. This video shook me with the importance of trust over performance and learnt to choose someone who may not be the best performer but is trustworthy over someone who is high performing but untrustworthy. And this is different in the way businesses operate. Companies have many metrics to measure performance and skills with minimal to no metrics to measure someone’s trustworthiness. What are your thoughts? Should performance and trust be given equal importance in the workplace?

While doing some work for the US Navy SEAL, Simon Sinek, author and speaker, was curious to know how the Navy selected who gets to join the elite SEAL Team 6. To answer that question, they drew him a graph of Trust vs Performance as illustrated in this video.

What You Tolerate Defines Your Business and Your Time Your business results directly reflect the behavior you allow. A relaxed culture where no one is held accountable leads to poor customer service and frustrated employees. In this environment, there's no difference between your best workers and everyone else. Check your gut - you see the signs that people aren't being held responsible. Each problem might seem small, but together they show a pattern. Usually, just a few people make these mistakes over and over, but everyone notices. They also notice if there are any consequences for poor work. Your best employees start to wonder if their hard work matters. Once they question their value, they might start looking for other jobs. You get what you tolerate. Admiral William McRaven's famous speech, "Make Your Bed," talks about getting the little things right. Watch it here: https://lnkd.in/e__QWanA Act with Intelligent Urgency: 1. Notice the small wins - insist on getting the little things right 2. Don't expect perfection - do better than yesterday and help them improve 3. Remember teamwork matters - this seems obvious, but many people get caught up in their own work and forget how it affects others. #SmallBusiness #BusinessLeadership

**Leadership Hack - Listen and Act** One of the reasons the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) is so popular is because everything about it is made to achieve results in the most efficient manner possible. - Organizational charts are structured in a way that leaves no confusion as to roles and responsibilities. - Employees are hired based on values to determine fit. They are reviewed based on metrics. - Meetings are streamlined to tackle one problem after the next. The same concept applies for employee relations. When employees bring issues to the table, they have already thought about things, and are seeking guidance so they can move on to their next task. Listening is just step 1??. Many managers stop here. The issue is uncomfortable. If they stick their head in the sand, it might go away. Does this ever work in life or relationships? Step 2??, the whole point of the meeting, is resolution. If you cannot, or will not, fix the problem, you need to be honest about why not. Leaving things unresolved adds an additional burden onto the employee. Not only are they dealing with the original issue, they are now questioning leadership. This is a break in trust. “I came to you with a problem, why aren’t you helping me?” We see this in personal relationships and systems all the time. The result is people taking matters into their own hands. What happens in a healthy culture, with strong Leadership, is issue resolution. If that cannot be done at the time, a reasonable deadline is set. A week is reasonable, two or more is not. #leadership #conflictresolution #maui #EOS

In today's dynamic work environment, fostering a culture of candour is crucial for team leaders aiming to enhance team performance and innovation. Encouraging open communication without penalising team members for their honesty can significantly boost psychological safety, a concept championed by Harvard Business School professor Amy Edmondson. Psychological safety allows team members to feel safe to take risks and express their thoughts without fear of negative consequences, which is essential for continuous learning and improvement. Why Encourage candour? Promotes Innovation: When team members feel safe to share their ideas, even those that challenge the status quo, it leads to innovative solutions and improvements. A culture that welcomes diverse perspectives can harness the creative potential of the team. Enhances Trust and Collaboration: Open communication builds trust among team members, fostering a collaborative environment where everyone feels valued and heard. This trust is foundational for effective teamwork and achieving common goals. Improves Problem-Solving: Encouraging candour helps in identifying problems early on, allowing the team to address issues proactively rather than reactively. This can prevent minor issues from escalating into major problems. Boosts Employee Engagement and Wellbeing: When employees feel their voices matter, they are more engaged and satisfied with their work. This sense of belonging and contribution can lead to higher job satisfaction and lower turnover rates. Evidence Supporting Candour Research highlights the benefits of psychological safety in teams, showing that it leads to better performance, more learning behaviour, and increased team satisfaction. Organisations that prioritise open communication and feedback tend to have more engaged employees and better overall performance. How to Implement Candour in Teams Model Open Communication: Leaders should demonstrate openness by sharing their thoughts and encouraging feedback. This sets the tone for the rest of the team. Create Safe Spaces for Dialogue: Establish forums or regular meetings where team members can express their ideas and concerns without fear of retribution. Acknowledge and Appreciate Honesty: Recognise and thank team members for their candid feedback, reinforcing that their input is valued and respected. By fostering an environment where candour is encouraged and not penalised, team leaders can unlock the full potential of their teams, driving both personal and organisational growth. #people #management #culture

Just finished "A Navy SEAL's Surprising Key to Building Unstoppable Teams: Caring" by Pete Mockaitis | How to Be Awesome at Your Job! Check it out: https://lnkd.in/gWVvB3bb #interpersonalleadership, #teambuilding. It always fascinated me as to how a Seal Team functions so efficiently and efficiently in an environment that is chaotic and full of uncertainty. This certification gives insight into a new acronym associated with team building ‘CARE’ C - Connect/ Communicate, which speaks about the importance of connecting and open communication with your team. A - Achieve which is the direction and goals that is set out to be achieved by the team. R - Respect speaks of the mutual respect that should be built within the team, respecting diversity and harnessing the different of opinion. Interestingly it is mentioned of the importance of identifying any member who does not fall within this criteria, giving the necessary support/ intervention and if no improvement is seen looking at alternative measures so that this will not have an impact on the rest of the team. E - Empower, lastly the importance of empowering your team to do their best by providing them all required resources and guidance. Practicing ‘CARE’ does not necessarily mean being soft rather it facilitates how to navigate towards achieving the goals/ objectives in any challenging situation.

?? Relationships matter in every business! ?? Yesterday was a powerful reminder of the impact genuine connections can have. Six years ago, I worked with a government official, providing them with exceptional service. Fast forward to yesterday, when that same official remembered exactly who I was and welcomed my team with open arms. They even gave us a tour of the military installation and trusted us with 7 truckloads based on the strength of that relationship. ?? This experience speaks volumes about the importance of building and nurturing meaningful connections. It’s not just about transactions or deals—it’s about trust, integrity, and consistency over time. Relationships like these are built on the long game, and they pay off in ways you can’t predict. To all my fellow professionals, never underestimate the power of relationships. It’s those moments of service and dedication today that will create opportunities for you in the future. ?? Keep building. Keep connecting. And always remember—the bridges you build today will carry you to new heights tomorrow. #RelationshipsMatter #LogisticsLeadership #T3RALogistics #Networking #TrustAndIntegrity #LeadershipJourney

Sharing this in order to try an help people understand concepts that are impossible to convey due to polysemy in business terms. Adaptability, scalability and productivity in modern organizations requires a decentralized approach whenever practical. But factors like Goodhart's law with useful but flawed KPIs; easy to sell but bad for adaptability, scalability, and productivity frameworks (SAFe etc...) keep eroding trust. In many organizations I have consulted for there is a war of attrition on trust that is a primary cause, and not a symptom, of many of their problems. IMHO this is almost always an unintentional conflict, and one that will only escalate by ignoring it. The typical industry shills are still selling that engagement is getting employees to "go the extra mile" when focusing on communication, trust, and shared intent is more practical and profitable for many organizations. Depending on the actions of heroes and gods simply isn't sustainable, but we have all seen that us mortals can move mountains when we work together.

"Empowering Growth through Innovative Leadership: Driving Success in Advertising & Marketing (B2B)"
5 个月This is a thought-provoking topic! Trust is foundational for a cohesive team and fosters collaboration and innovation. While performance metrics are essential, they don’t capture the full picture of a team member's contribution. A trustworthy individual can enhance team dynamics and create a supportive environment, ultimately driving better long-term results. Striking the right balance between performance and trust is crucial—having both can elevate a team to new heights. I’d love to hear how others approach this balance!
