Since 1973, World Environment Day, led by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), has raised awareness about critical environmental issues, from climate change to chemical pollution. This year, we're turning our attention to land recovery and drought resilience, with a focus on becoming #GenerationRestoration. Through water conservation, we can restore desertified land and prevent food loss. Though e-waste recycling isn't often thought of when it comes to water conservation, each year ANZRP calculates its impacts on water availability in our Life Cycle Assessment conducted by Lifecycles using UNEP's Available WAter REmaining (AWARE) assessment method. Last year, ANZRP saved 3,682,157 cubic metres of water, or the equivalent of the average annual water use of 288 Australian households! This water has been saved by reducing the need for virgin materials to create new products, through the recovery of materials through e-waste recycling. World Environment Day isn’t just about one day of the year to show support and help raise awareness. Since 1973,?World Environment Day has raised awareness to highlight critical environmental issues, from climate change to the depletion of the ozone layer in a bid to encourage governments, businesses, civil society groups and individuals to take action. In the procurement industry, like many other sectors, factoring in the environmental impact and planning for long-term sustainability should be embedded at every stage in order to take responsible action to reduce our global carbon footprint. Did you know? ?? Only 0.5 per cent of water on Earth is useable and available freshwater. Climate change is dangerously affecting that supply. ?? The world will need to raise its food production by 60–70 per cent to feed a projected human population of 9 billion by 2050 even as the current agricultural expansion continues to threaten forests and biodiversity. ?? Cities account for 75 per cent of global resource and energy use and produce more than half of global waste and at least 60 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions. As part of Grattes Goes Green (our sustainability awareness month), we invited our teams to complete the WWF carbon calculator to estimate their personal carbon footprints and highlight some quick wins to improve the results. We’d like to thank everyone who took part and sent their results through to us. From the data, we’ve been able to spot some trends: ?? Travel is the biggest contributor to staff footprints, and is the largest contributor for 52% of staff. ?? The smallest footprint calculated was just 7 tonnes, with the highest a hefty 24.2 tonnes (the UK benchmark is 10 tonnes co2 per person, per year). ?? Our staff are sustainable buyers, with 54% having the stuff they buy as the lowest contributor to their footprint. The feedback has been brilliantly positive, with some being surprised at the biggest contributors to their carbon footprint. This activity feeds into our Group-wide Journey to Net Zero. Part of this mission includes encouraging environmentally-conscious behaviours within our teams. So, measuring our own footprints through this calculator is a great way to raise awareness and help form those positive eco-habits.
