Something Else: A new way to breathe life back into our high streets and tackle loneliness? from Satya Morarji The conversation of “how do we save our high streets?” often gets mixed up with the conversation of “”how do we save retail?””. These are two different questions, and we focus so much on “”fixing retail”” that we forget what high streets are all about: A space where the community can come together and connect. In this speech, I’m going to talk about the power of a new type of Third Place which I can only describe as being “”Something Else”” and how it might just be the solution we need to fill empty retail spaces, tackle loneliness and fight back against the divisive nature of digital media by creating an environment where dialogue, connection, respect and understanding prevail.

?? Supporting Chief Bailey’s Call for Safer Streets ?? In a recent IndyStar piece, IMPD Chief Christopher Bailey made a strong case for implementing automated traffic enforcement cameras in Indianapolis. His argument is clear: traditional traffic stops alone cannot fully address the growing issues of reckless driving, speeding, and red-light violations. To create safer streets, we need to embrace innovative solutions. I wholeheartedly support this idea. Automated cameras have the potential to deter dangerous driving behaviors and free up law enforcement to focus on other critical areas of public safety. These technologies aren’t just tools—they’re investments in the well-being of our community. But this isn’t just about technology. It’s about starting a meaningful dialogue. How do we ensure these solutions are implemented equitably and transparently? What additional measures can we take to complement this effort, such as public education or improved infrastructure? Let’s engage in this important conversation. As Indianapolis moves forward, we all have a role in shaping a safer, more secure city for everyone. What are your thoughts on this approach? I’d love to hear from you! #SaferStreets #Indianapolis #CommunitySafety #Innovation

Excited to share my research with Elif Ensari Sucuoglu looking at how the police in NYC respond to illegal parking. It paints a dire picture in terms of street safety, but also offers concrete solutions that can increase accountability and make cities more livable for everyone. New research by Jacobs and AtkinsRéalis for the U.K. Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom reveals the potential for noise cameras to help tackle excessive noise from illegally modified exhausts and anti-social drivers. The research included a review of noise camera products, track trials of two functionally different noise cameras, roadside trials for one noise camera at four locations, and analysis to recommend a noise level for possible enforcement. The roadside trials also showed a deterrent effect, where drivers changed their behaviour at the trial sites to emit less noise or use alternative routes. ? The research provides important information in helping to create quieter streets for communities to enjoy. The DfT will use the research to encourage local authorities to install noise cameras. ? Congestion pricing – in which drivers are charged a fee for entering certain roads or lanes – is a more effective strategy for reducing traffic congestion than other policies, according to #USCPrice experts. But the decision to halt the Manhattan plan reflects #political challenges to cut the number of motorists on U.S. roads. “We have a system developed over a century that vastly underprices use of the private vehicle,” said Genevieve Giuliano, USC Price distinguished professor. “Since most voters are private vehicle users, it is really hard to make changes that move us closer to a user pay system.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gA2Y_8AU
