“The reason for the Alert is potential damage to the electricity grid as a result of Storm éowyn” It’s only 6 weeks since Storm Darragh knocked-out the electricity grid for 10s of thousands of homes and businesses in Wales. And Ireland was similarly affected in the last week or two by the snow/ice storms. During Storm Darragh, a huge solar farm was smashed to pieces on Anglesey/Ynys M?n. Tomorrow, as often happens during storms, wind turbines will be switched-off to protect them and also the electricity grid from damaging power surges - from too much wind. Billpayers will pay the wind developers for this switch-off in constraints payments to the tune of 10s of ￡millions. Yesterday, meanwhile, there was negligible wind in the UK. To be at the mercy of the weather - whether its through unreliable generation or transmission/distribution of electricity - is no way to run, let alone grow, an economy in the 21st century. There will be more storms and more Dunkelflautes. More potent too, it is forecast. We need clean, resilient, reliable energy.

?? Tunnel boring machine update ?? A new tunnel boring machine will be launched to help keep Snowy 2.0 on its delivery timeline, subject to approval by the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure. New ground testing techniques have provided a better understanding of the full extent of a complex fault zone on the route of the 17 kilometre tunnel that will connect Snowy 2.0’s upper reservoir to its underground power station. The unmatched scale and duration of Snowy 2.0’s storage and generating ability will effectively provide the network with critical electricity supply insurance against extended periods without enough wind and sunlight. Most other forms of storage, including batteries, can only generate power for a handful of hours. According to Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), Snowy 2.0 will supply a majority of the National Electricity Market’s storage needs, greater than every other storage asset combined.
