Great news! Yesterday, as part of our commitment to being environmentally responsible, we celebrated Earth Day by planting eight trees outside our facilities. We are dedicated to achieving our Sustainable Development Goals and taking steps towards a greener future. In the upcoming weeks, we will be planting seeds in our community garden and adding two more planters! However, we won't be able to put gardens outside of the Bloomingdale location as there is no outside water hookup. But don't worry as we'll split the harvest evenly between both buildings. Additionally, we'll be revamping our pollinator garden to help the bee population and encourage cross-pollination. Happy Earth Day! At City Hall today, Recology and city departments, SF Environment, Public Works, and the SF Fire Department, celebrated over 30 years of San Francisco’s annual tree chipping tradition! ?? In 2023, San Francisco recycled about 274 tons of holiday trees into a green gift for our environment. These trees don’t just disappear – they help restore soil health! ? Chipped trees will become compost and be given back to the planet after the season of giving. And remember, Recology collects natural and undecorated trees curbside from January 2–17! ?? Place your tree next to your curbside collection bins the night before your scheduled collection day. Please position your tree so it can be easily spotted by the Recology crew exclusively collecting trees. It is very important to remove all decorations, tinsel, nails, stands, and lights – anything that had been added to the natural tree. Your tree must be as bare, empty, and natural as the day you purchased it! That way, there will be no contaminants in the compost. Let’s take virtual photo tour of the #sustainability initiatives at Javits Center, the venue for #GreenFin24: Photo 1: ?? A rooftop farm...literally farm to table products! The goal is to have 60% of catered menus have at least one item derived from the garden. Flowers used as decor for events can also be picked directly from the garden. Photo 2: ?? The largest rooftop orchard in the country which is incorporated into the meals served to guests. Photo 3: ?? The second largest green roof in the country, which also serves as a wildlife sanctuary for dozens of local and migratory bird species, several bat species and thousands of insects.? Absorbing up to seven million gallons of storm water run-off annually, the green roof also reduces the urban heat island effect in the area by about 1.9 degrees Fahrenheit. Photo 4: ?? Nine bee hives with 60,000 bees. Honey that is harvested is used on coffee stations and for select giveaways. Photo 5: ?? A peek inside the kitchen.
