??? Celebrating the Official 1st Day of School! ??? When I was in Kindergarten, my teacher asked us to draw a house... you know, a box with a triangle for the roof, a couple of rectangles for the door, window, and chimney. But I didn’t follow directions. Instead, I drew a floor plan – I was 5 years old. My mom was called in because of it, but when she saw my drawing, she realized I had drawn our entire three-story house in floor plan view. She told me that once I could pronounce the word 'architect,' I could become one. Since then, I’ve drawn countless floor plans from my imagination, always fueled by my passion for design. I even used to lay out the fall leaves in our front yard as a floor plan to invite the neighborhood kids to come over and play house. ?? To celebrate this special day, here’s a throwback picture of my mom and me from when I was very young. Swipe to see how much I look like her as an adult! ?? Weekly Math Challenge! ?? ?? Lower Elementary: Question: Olivia had a fantastic fishing day! She caught 4 snappers, 6 mackerels, 1 grouper, and even 1 soggy boot! She threw half of the snappers and half of the mackerels back into the ocean. How many fish did she take home? ?? Upper Elementary: Question: Harvey is at a theme park where tokens cost 75 cents each. A roller coaster ride costs 2 tokens, and a Ferris wheel ride costs 3 tokens. Harvey rides each ride 7 times. How much did he spend on rides? ?? Middle School: Question: Only one in every 250,000 alligators is born white. If there are about 1,750,000 alligators in Florida, how many of them are likely white? ?? Algebra and Up: Question: It costs $20 to rent a jet ski, plus $1.50 per hour of use and the cost of gas. James rents a jet ski for 2 hours and uses 3 quarts of gas, which costs $2.98 per gallon. What is the total cost of his rental? There's been a lot of rhetoric going around for years about if what is being taught in school is useful... like how much of what you learned in 5th grade applies to real life. Well two recent experiences helped me appreciate my good #DetroitPublicSchools Bagley Elementary School education! 1. I recently volunteered at the #ChicagoFootballClassic for my Alma Mater, The National Treasure that is #MorganState... Anywho...when talking to mostly high school seniors telling them that its located in Baltimore, MD, you won't believe the bewildered looks and questions of "Where is that?" Me being me, gave the bewildered looks back, and replied, oh... "Where are your counselors or teachers?? Are they not teaching Geography anymore??" I know the states, their capitals, major cities, bordering states, shapes and locations on the map cause of my 5th, 7th & 10th grade teachers!! Speaking of shapes... Which brings me to #2. Why 25 years into my career am I doing process design prototypes in #figma where I had to reintroduce myself to quadrangles, rumbuses, all the "gons" and Roy G. Biv (iykyk and should know!) to illustrate multiple inter-departmental teams ways of working?? While in my opinion, the whole thing looks like I am telling the team how to get to Sesame Street (noting to self to resource a graphic designer on the team to make this thing next level)... Its effective and appreciated! Yeah, I'm smarter that a 5th grader, cause I was an asute 5th grader!! But will this current generation of 5th graders be on the same level??
