Earlier this week I visited Stockholm, as I am currently helping a client recruit a new Nordic Public Affairs lead ???????????????? What started out as a discussion about the right Public Affairs setup has now also segwayed in to an interesting recruiting task. Recruiting has not typically been what I done most of in the past, but as the organisation of Public Affairs is (of course) closely tied to the people & I know a lot of smart PA pros, it makes sense for me to contribute here also - I firmly believe that the right, future-proof composition of the skills inside the PA function can make the difference between succes & failure. The challenge in this case is also to decide where the Public Affairs function is ideally placed, because this forms the skills needed by the ideal candidate. So questions we discussed: ?? Where should the PA function ideally be placed? And realistically...? ?? Who should the nordic lead refer to? Ideally/realistically? ?? Pros & cons for placing the function under Communication ?? Objectives for the new Nordic PA Lead; short, middle & long term These questions and answers form which candidate is best suited for the role and is quite easy for me to work from afterwards. Right now the Public Affairs job market in the Nordics is pretty hot, so if we go for a candidate, it has to be the right one. #publicaffairs #recruiting anderskopp.com

Last week I shared some details about an organisation & recruiting task I am currently helping a Swedish client with. I received some very interesting responses and feedback afterwards here on LI, so thought I would continue sharing. So after establishing which organisational setup would be the best fit for the Public Affairs function, we have now progressed to next step, which is recruitment of the Nordic Public Affairs Lead. I kicked off this step by outlining some of the most common archetypes in Public Affairs as well as what will be needed in the future to compete. I have fresh insights about the current state of Public Affairs, as I am currently also interviewing PA pros from all over Europe for The Public Affairs Manager Survey 2025, which will be out on the 18th of November. But back to this recruitment, we are discussing the composition of the Public Affairs function going forward, which types & skills to look for and - very important - when to hire them. I cannot stress this enough. You have to recruit people in the right order! If your organisation is very immature in terms of Public Affairs, it doesn't make sense to hire certain archetypes. On the other hand if your are building the function, and e.g. have a 5 year plan for this, then you should look for the skills needed for this. It depends on the maturity level. I operate with four archetypes currently: ?? Firefighter - Re-active, short-term &?focus, single-issues, network skills prioritized ?? Organizer - More internally focused on structures, processes and building a team that can drive PA-efforts. ?? Diplomats - Experts in connecting and aligning external expectations with internal performance. ?? Specialist - Experts on certain issues, methods or tactics.?? Remember these are *archetypes*, its not always this binary, and candidates can of course be more than one type, but this helps the organisation organize, visualize and reflect on what they will need - and when! This is why organisation and recruitment in Public Affairs is so closely linked and shouldn't be separated.
