A meeting last week between the Board of Education and its teachers' union in one #Illinois town has left one group unhappy. Members have voiced their displeasure with what it views as a lack of urgency in negotiations for better pay and more support. Contracts for the Meridian Federation of Teachers in Macon expired in August. Seventy teachers who are part of the bargaining unit have met with the board only six times since June. Brian Pekovitch, teacher and president of the union, said they are seeking a resolution. "We have another session planned with the mediator on Wednesday," Pekovitch noted. "We're very hopeful that we will be able to resolve these differences and come to an agreement to avoid a strike. That's the absolute last resort that we want to have happen." Ninety-two percent of voting members of the union agreed last week to authorize a strike if more substantial progress is not made. The district has had difficulties even attracting substitute teachers for the school year. According to the education site niche.com, Macon County's?teacher-to-student ratio?is 14-1. Pekovitch praised the support of parents and argued teachers are shouldering more than what their job description requires, which is taking a toll. He acknowledged teaching has changed from pre-pandemic days causing classrooms to struggle to meet students' needs. The union wants teachers to stay in the district and not seek higher salaries elsewhere. "Our biggest thing has been just teacher retention," Pekovitch explained. "There's a problem with our pay when you're looking at teachers that have longevity in the district. Once you've been here longer, if you have higher education, there's just some gaps in there that we're trying to close to keep our more experienced teachers here." Pekovitch added the mindset that nice schools and newer technology alone would attract people to want to be in Macon "is just not the case anymore." Workers who help #WashingtonState classrooms run are calling for higher wages. Known as classified staff, their jobs include administrative work, transportation and custodial services. #Unions representing workers, including the American Federation of Teachers of Washington and Washington Education Association, have launched a wage campaign to increase pay for these workers. Anitra Wise, a para-educator with the?Tacoma School District, helps teachers in the classroom and said her wages simply aren't enough. "We have to work two and three different jobs just to catch up with the cost of living, including housing, groceries and things that we need to survive," she said. With Washington state school districts out for summer, classified staff members face another challenge: the suspension of their low wages. Wise said she's working at summer school this year. "We have to supplement that income somehow, and I really don't get a summer, because I have to work just to supplement my income," she continued. Wise added classified staff have many important jobs, including the work she does as a para-educator in the classroom. "We're the glue that keep it together, do all the small jobs and the big jobs, too. Because without the team of para-educators, the teachers would not be able to teach, and para-educators are teachers also," she said. The Board of Education for Covington Independent Public Schools has unanimously decided to enhance full-time staff salaries by 4%, with consideration for individual tenure. Superintendent Alvin Garrison predicts that, with this increase, most employees will see their salaries rise by approximately 5.9% to 6%. There is, however, debate among board members on the approach to future salary increases. While member Kareem Simpson suggests targeted raises for specific positions to bolster competitiveness, Glenda Huff believes that uniform raises are crucial for maintaining staff morale. President Tom Haggard, initially skeptical, now deems the raises manageable given the district's fiscal health, but echoes Simpson's concern for long-term sustainability. “The Grand Island Education Association shares the district’s focus on recruiting and retaining quality staff.” The Grand Island Education Association (GIEA) and GIPS reached a negotiated agreement for the 2025-2026 school year and are aligned on supporting teachers who will in turn support our students. Teacher Salaries Are at an All-Time Low Districts struggle to hire and retain teachers largely due to low pay. Teachers don’t go into the profession to make big bucks, but they do expect a livable wage. Many states have increased teacher salaries, but when those salaries are adjusted for inflation, they are less than they were in 2008. According to the 2022 NEA Teacher Salary Benchmark Report, in 2020-2021 “the average teaching salary was $41,770, an increase of 1.4 percent over the previous school year. When adjusted for inflation, this represents a four percent decrease.” And let’s not forget bus drivers, custodians, teachers’ aides, cafeteria workers, and other educational support staff (ESP's). More than a third of all ESP's who work full-time earn less than $25,000 annually.

This minimum salary amount for first year teachers hasn't changed since 2018, although inflation has increased by 25% over that same time period. With new representatives in Texas, it's time to quit underpaying those we're trusting with our most valuable resources and lift the salary floor for educators.
