Did you know that remote and hybrid services offer incredible benefits to students in K-12 schools? Here's why: 1. Accessibility: Remote and hybrid services break down barriers, ensuring all students have access to support regardless of their location or circumstances. According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), telepractice can reach students in rural areas where face-to-face services might not be available. 2. Flexibility: These models offer flexibility in scheduling and delivery, accommodating diverse learning needs and preferences. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) highlights how hybrid services allow for personalized support, enhancing student engagement and success. 3. Equity: By providing services remotely, schools promote equity by reaching students who may face challenges attending in-person sessions due to health concerns, transportation issues, or other factors. NASP emphasizes that remote and hybrid services help level the playing field, ensuring all students have equal access to support. Embracing remote and hybrid services in K-12 education isn't just about adapting to new circumstances—it's about creating more inclusive and equitable learning environments for all students. Let's keep exploring innovative ways to support student success! #Careoptionsforkids #RemoteLearning #EquityInEducation #InclusiveLearningSources: ASHA.org, NASPonline.org

Teletherapy in schools is transforming access to essential support services like speech pathology and school psychologist assessments! With remote sessions, students can receive mandated services from highly qualified clinicians. Research from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) confirms that teletherapy for speech pathology assessments is just as effective as in-person sessions (Source: asha.org). Similarly, studies by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) highlight the effectiveness of teletherapy in conducting school psychologist assessments remotely (Source: nasponline.org). Remote services are a vital resource to school districts to support NOT supplant existing district personnel. Let's embrace technology to ensure every student gets the comprehensive support they need to excel! #careoptionsforkids #Teletherapy #SchoolSupport

Day 39 of 50: The Role of Speech Pathology in Early Childhood Development Early childhood is a critical period for development, especially when it comes to communication. As a future speech pathologist, I find it fascinating to see how language skills grow during these formative years and how much impact early intervention can have. Children learn to communicate not only through words but also through gestures, facial expressions, and play. Identifying and addressing any delays or challenges early can set the stage for lifelong success. Whether it's helping a child form their first words or guiding them to overcome speech barriers, I’m inspired by the thought of being part of their journey. Speech therapy in early childhood isn’t just about teaching sounds—it’s about empowering children to connect with the world around them. And when that happens, their confidence soars, and so does their ability to thrive in all areas of life. What are your thoughts on the importance of speech therapy during early childhood? Have you seen its impact on children or families? I'd love to hear your stories! #SpeechPathology #EarlyIntervention #ChildhoodDevelopment #SLPJourney 4o

Such a crucial piece of research on many fronts. Firstly, to prevent errors. Secondly, the outcomes could facilitate improved health in general as we know that hearing loss is a risk factor for dementia. #patientwellbeing #medicalprotection

In the world of audiology, there are three and four-year doctoral programs. The past few years have given rise to more universities transitioning from four to three-year programs. I've heard people talk down on three-year programs while others sing their praises. This is my honest opinion of them. They are for some and not for others. While I'm sure they are all designed differently, they are fast-paced with a lot of information very quickly. Exams come at you fast, and how you learn plays a huge roll. I've also heard things mentioned about not as much clinic time for those in three-year programs. I'd like to personally put that to bed right now. I am a product of a three-year program, and the clinical experiences I received were excellent and covered all facets of the field. They included the following: Hearing Rehab Center (Private Practice), Salem Audiology Clinic (Private Practice), Oregon Health and Science University (Hospital), Educational Service District 112 (School Based, Vancouver, Washington), Willamette ESD (School Based, Salem, Oregon), Advanced Bionics, Research & Technology (Manufacturer), Providence Neurodevelopmental Center for Children, (Self-explanatory, Portland, Oregon), NHS Lothian (Public Hospital, Edinburgh, Scotland, UK), A Private Interoperative Monitoring Company (Portland, Oregon), Legacy Emanuel Medical Center (Portland, Oregon), and University of Chicago Medical Center (Chicago, IL). I had hands-on experiences and was a sponge, learning everything I could at each location. I had a phenomenal experience, being the second class ever to graduate from Pacific University in Oregon. This three-year program challenged me and pushed me to be better. I don't think three-year programs are bad at all. I just think when you're researching programs, you need to make the right choice of how you learn and the pace you can do so. Challenge yourself, but also be willing to rise to the challenge. #audiology #cochlearimplant #hearinghealth #hearingaids #ears #aud2b

Our latest #ASHAInnovator is Meaghan Foody, an SLP in Iowa. Read Meaghan's story to learn how she works to make a positive difference in the CSD profession by serving clients and supporting graduate students as they develop skills while gaining confidence as clinicians. What led you to become a CSD professional? "My interest and passion for the field of speech-language pathology started at a young age following a family member’s diagnosis with a communication disorder. Watching the impact that speech therapy had on their development and ability to connect with others really ignited the spark. From there, I pursued the career and found my interest to primarily lie in aural rehabilitation. I have never regretted my career choice, which is something I don't take for granted and gives me confidence that I made the right decision." Tell us about a time you’ve made an impact in your profession. "As a clinical supervisor I have the great fortune of not only seeing the impact of my work as it relates to my clients, but also with the graduate student clinicians I work with. Watching graduate students grow and develop in their skills has been such a wonderful part of my career, but what really carries meaning for me is seeing them develop their confidence as clinicians. I hope that by supporting them in their development, my impact on the field then has a wide-reaching ripple effect that reaches their clients and family members as well." How do you use innovation in your work? "Innovation is an important part of my work and is something I strive to incorporate every day. Innovation has been a large part of an initiative I have been working on here at the University of Iowa. Historically, UI Speaks was a summer program for kids and teens who stutter. However, over the past two years, the other supervisors in the program and I have also opened the camp to kids and teens who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing. While on the surface, these groups might not have a lot in common, our campers have learned to understand each other and find ways they can relate which has cultivated meaningful relationships and experiences for both them and student clinicians." ________________________ The ASHA Innovator initiative is led by ASHA’s 2023 Board of Directors President Dr. Robert M. Augustine, PhD, CCC-SLP. Answers submitted by ASHA Innovators are presented in their own words and may not necessarily represent ASHA or its views. #ASHAInnovator

Day 5 of 50: Celebrating Small Wins: My Recent Success as a Speech Pathology Student Last semester, I achieved something I’m really proud of—I earned an A in one of my toughest classes, Speech and Hearing Science. It was definitely one of the most challenging courses I’ve taken so far, but through hard work and persistence, I made it through. What really helped me succeed was having a study buddy who kept me accountable during exam prep. We motivated each other to stay on track, which made a huge difference. I also mapped out my days with a clear schedule, ensuring I made time for studying, class, and personal commitments. This accomplishment showed me that I’m capable of overcoming tough challenges when I plan ahead and stay disciplined. It also reinforced how much I love this major and that I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be, even when things feel difficult. Looking ahead, my next goal is to continue growing and learning so that I can become a professional in the field and help kids in need of speech therapy. This journey has only made me more excited for the future! For fellow students or professionals: What’s a recent win that has motivated you to keep going? How do you push through the tough moments? #SpeechPathology #StudentSuccess #LearningJourney #LinkedInChallenge

While more graduates are being employed by private practices than ever before, most speech pathology students don't get the opportunity to experience placements in these settings before graduation. Our new resource 'Practice education in private practice', helps practice owners consider the 'what' and the 'how' of student supervision in private practice. It includes checklists, online resources, facts and suggestions to equip practice owners to consider offering student placements. ?? Read the resource: https://bit.ly/4dxDo2L ??
