"Ye Kitta Chalega Sir?" (How long it will last?) is a very traditional query. This question is dreadful when it comes to Membrane filtration during advanced water treatment. The scaling due to calcium carbonate is a nightmare for the maintenance of membranes. Langelier in 1946 gave a simple methodology to predict scaling. The Langelier Index is given by LSI = pH - pHs pH = measured pH of concentrated water stream pHs = saturation pH for CaCO3 LSI > 0 Water is supersaturated and scaling may occur LSI < 0 Water is under saturated and scaling will not occur LSI = 0 Neutral, neither scale nor remove To get a magnified view, many industries also use Ryzner index. The Ryzner index can qualify water in 5 categories scale, heavy scale, aggressive, very aggressive and harmless. Below mentioned graph can be used to find indexes.
