Ever jump straight to fixing something without really understanding the problem? Yeah, we all have. But here's the thing: solving the right problem is key to making a real impact for your users. There are different types of problems, like figuring out the best route (analytical) or brainstorming new ideas (divergent). But how do you identify the best problem to tackle? SMART Problem Statement! Think of it as a clear and concise mission statement for your problem-solving journey. Here's how to craft a good one: ??SMART: Specific (what exactly needs fixing?), Measurable (can you track progress?), Achievable (is it realistic?), Relevant (important to users?), Time-bound (when do you need a solution?). ??Think Impact First: Consider the situation, who it affects, and any limitations. ??Ask Yourself: ? What do we need to know? ? What is the problem's context? ? What is going to have the most impact? ? What time do we have to solve this? ? What possible constraints do we have? ? Who are the major players for this problem to be resolved? ? What will and will not be considered in the solution of the problem? ? What available insight or resources can you leverage on to solve this? By answering these questions, you'll be well on your way to defining the best problem to solve. Next Post: I'll explore structuring your problem for the best outcomes.

Is it the tool, the measurement of the result using it, or the mindset at fault? What's easier to change? What are the consequences for doing so? For ignoring? Is it worth getting in-between the tool and the user, or better to let them use it and find out? A few thoughts inspired by a recent conversation with colleagues.

In problem solving, strategy should drive the tools that you use. Your strategy drives you to ask certain questions and then you select tools which can help you answer the question. Unfortunately, in most problem solving training, tools are the strategy. Whatever tool you've been taught is the tool that you use. The most popular problem solving tools seem to be the fishbone diagram and 5 Why's and even brainstorming. The use of these tools reflect the problem solving strategy called "Guessing." The Guessing strategy works when problems are simple. Happily, for the people promoting and getting paid for the Guessing strategy, most problems are simple. When it comes to difficult and complex problems, the Guessing strategy just won't cut it. In the linked video, John Allen, explains The New Science of Fixing Things approach to problem solving. The first thing to understand is that whatever undesirable outcome is occurring, there are not many causes. He doesn't say this outright in the example he shares, but don't jump in to solve the problem that you want to solve, clearly establish what is happening or not happening. This video is well worth watching and John is someone you should follow if you're committed to the highest performance in your problem solving practice.

Content Architect + Content Strategist ? Humanizing knowledge systems for digital services ?? metadata, taxonomy, ontology, object-oriented UX
Most people recognize the importance of understanding organizational goals and needs of cross-functional partners, but not told how exactly to do this sort of internal discovery work. And it's hard to see the larger landscape of interconnected outcomes when you're deep in the weeds in Jira. This seems to be a great way to map the cascades of outcomes and values, and get a holistic picture of how your work fits into the larger organizational value drivers. This would make for a great onboarding exercise to uncover the levers of an org to direct your efforts and avoid getting wires crossed.
Value, Work, Goals, People, and Money/Funding.... when these things are coherent, great things can happen. When they are at odds and clash, you have drag. 1. Let’s start with the value view of the world. We can imagine this as a graph of “things” (could be drivers, levers, capabilities, etc.) with an input/output relationship. 2. Next we layer in work and goals. We target our work (or bets, experiments, projects, speedboats, missions, whatever) to impact these nodes, and set goals based on our ability to influence/improve those nodes. 3. OK, but we need creative problem solvers to do the work, run the experiments, and try to achieve those goals. Let’s add them. Hmmm. Do you notice the potential issue? Our teams are spread thin across multiple goals and work items. 4. But wait, there’s more. Let’s add money. Ah...now we've gotten to the bottom of the issue. ToDO: Map value, work, goals, people, and money and see how coherent (or incoherent) your graph is.
