Futures Explored was one of the sponsors for the annual Creative Concord Jam, an event that celebrates artists of the community. We came together and shared what we did to our neighbors. Artist is one of the many voices that I speak with – musician, writer, lover, fighter, and so much more. Art is a word that speaks meaning in the plural: ‘arts’. I draw inspiration from artists of long ago, artists of today, and my secret heroes – imagining their lives bound by my own experience of life and as a woman that is transgender in the 21st century, bringing this to bear as praxis in my life and in the art that I make. https://lnkd.in/gu5J_Vp6

We tend to focus on the instrumental value of communication: persuading people to accept our position, making the sale, or managing others. These are all legitimate goals. The greatest value of communication, though, is that it is a means to share our perspective and to invite others to see something in a new way. Here are a few examples: ? A disability rights advocate helped me see that design elements implemented for people with disabilities can make environments easier for everyone to navigate. ? A Black colleague helped me understand the strain of having her credibility questioned constantly. ? A client helped me understand the value of balancing privacy with appropriate disclosures. The influence wielded by these individuals occurred not through argument, but by their sharing experiences in a way that invited me to see something I was already familiar with from a new perspective. This 34-second video was one of my favorites to share with students to convey the power of perspective. A little shift can open up a whole new vision. #communication #perspective #influence #persuasion https://lnkd.in/egJjhSup

SDG 3.4 Selected Artist Teresa Melvin on her work: "Art like 'Fiery Red' matters deeply to a young, emerging artist like me because it symbolizes the universal journey of overcoming adversity & self-doubt, a theme that resonates with individuals of all ages, especially during the formative years of adolescence." - 34Gallery.org #mentalhealthawareness #SDG3

Fashion and style. Glamour optional. In entertainment, one or more is always present. My music career leans on the marriage of fashion and jazz. After all, they're both art. #jazz #style #fashiondesigner #musicbusiness
My new essay was published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art on #internationalwomensday ! In conjunction with their inclusion in the exhibit "Women Dressing Women" (which alas closes today), the essay celebrates the five year collaboration between designer Zelda Wynn Valdes and entertainer Joyce Bryant.

Just came across a profoundly moving Oscar-winning short film depicting the life of a deaf child raised in a household with hearing parents. It stirred a range of emotions within me – awareness, anger, and a deep desire to take action. Did you know that 78% of deaf children are sent to school without any support, where they often feel isolated and powerless? This statistic hit me hard. It's a stark reminder of the challenges faced by so many individuals in our society. As leaders, each of us possesses a unique history and a set of skills that have brought us to where we are today. We have the power to leverage these skills to create positive change and shape new realities. We all have our causes, our passions that ignite a fire within us. Whether it's advocating for the deaf community, promoting equality, or tackling environmental issues – there's something that calls to us, urging us to make a difference. I invite you to heed that calling. Take action. Lead by example. Together, we can make a meaningful impact and create a more inclusive and compassionate world. I've included a link to the short film in the comments below. Let's watch it together and continue the conversation on how we can drive positive change. #MakeADifference #LeadWithPurpose

ADA Compliance is not strictly specific to physical barriers. How does the ADA ensure work, recreational, and community environments are not discriminatory? Here are some of my ideas: *Produce a proactive PSA series. *Create a volunteer team to screen ADA compliance complaints to increase the number of complaints that get a formal review. *Offer a virtual ADA compliance certificate. *Partner with the insurance industry to decrease Workers Compensation and Directors & Officers premiums to businesses that require management and leadership to participate in ADA education. What are your ideas?
The burden of ensuring ADA compliance falls onto the 61 million Americans with disabilities. We must consistently fight for elevators to work, for sidewalks to be barrier free, for ramps to be the right pitch and free of trash. Here is why we need ADA police. #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityRights #AccessibleSpaces https://bit.ly/4arLV6A ID: A woman in a wheelchair sits at the bottom of a large staircase. There appears to be no accessibility features to use. She looks despondent and frustrated.
