I recently got the chance to watch Jason Bateman's new film about the 90 minutes leading up to the premiere of Saturday Night, which we now know as Saturday Night Live. As a huge fan of stories like this, it was fascinating to get a behind-the-scenes look at what Lorne Michaels went through to build and execute one of the most iconic and influential TV shows in history. It wasn’t a smooth ride—far from it. People were betting against the success of SNL from the start, even using it as leverage in negotiations to try and get Johnny Carson to take less money! Fast forward 50 seasons, and it’s still a cultural powerhouse, sparking conversations every weekend. Sure, there were rough patches—the "meh" seasons, cast shake-ups, and those episodes that just didn’t land. But SNL is still here, stronger than ever. What’s the takeaway? Persistence. Even when people doubt you or use your project as a pawn, keep going. Believe in your vision. The movie drives that home, and it’s a message we can all apply to our own work. I like these articles. In turbulent economic times, the real creatives pop up and shine. That is why the big wigs like; (Netflix) are changing their mind. This phenomena happened in 1969 with a film called “Easy Riders”, with actors; Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, and Jack Nicholson. ?All I could say, is great films are coming my friends. How SAD was this film?............. Most people see Groundhog Day as a lighthearted comedy, but underneath the laughs, it's a profoundly sad story. Phil Connors, trapped in a seemingly endless cycle, spends countless days—maybe years—repeating the same routine, over and over. What stands out to me is Phil’s transformation. It takes time, repeated mistakes, and a lot of effort before he finally learns and grows. This has happened because privileged Middle/Upper-Class people have been able to claim "oppression" based on identity, the majority of the UK working class doesn't have "protected identities", and young lads from council estates are called privileged because of their sex and race. However, Tarquin and Felicity colour their hair and claim to be "Non-Binary" while in their comfortable heterosexual relationships and hoover up funding and opportunities like pigs in a trough. This is further exacerbated because all their college chums now hold DEI Directorships and use those connections to get a boost and create policies to actively discriminate against the majority of the UK working-class. Those of us who don't ignore it are frequently and consistently called "bigots" and "far-right" for bringing it up when all we are asking for is the equal opportunities we were promised. Our jobs are at risk if we speak up, or bring attention to it, because of those slurs and smears. As a bisexual man I've NEVER wanted to trade on my sexuality to get ahead, because it has nothing to do with my ability or skills. I want to get ahead because I'm good at what I do. However, I now HAVE to declare my sexual orientation in order to be considered for the likes of BFI funding, even BECTU demands I out myself to be simply included in the crew directory. It's patronising, it's infantilising, and I don't want to take part in it. We should not be giving ANYONE opportunities over someone else based on immutable characteristics or membership in a certain demographic.
