Are your team meetings terrible? Ours used to be pretty bad. Here's how we fixed it. Like many service-based businesses, our sales and engineering teams were at odds. So, we didn’t have the best working relationships and sometimes took comments in meetings personally rather than focusing on problem solving. This kept us stuck and we couldn't continue to grow. So we started working with a business coach using principles from The Entrepreneurial Operating System or EOS. Our EOS Worldwide coach was familiar with our industry and understood the challenges we faced. He really helped us turn things around. We had to sit down and work out our vision and core values together. Deciding on these things as a team helped everyone to buy in. Once we clearly defined our specialty — helping people solve problems with streamlined business IT solutions — it was easier for us to work together toward that. Comments during meetings now reflect our common vision and are more solutions-oriented, so people feel like they are tackling a problem together instead of being attacked. We pay attention to key metrics now so we can make more data-driven decisions. We have better meeting agendas that are oriented around identifying, discussing, and solving issues. Tasks can be assigned to be handled by the next meeting, short-term issues have a two-week lifecycle, and bigger issues are worked through quarterly. When we leave the room, we have an agreement on what the solution to an issue will be and we are committed to making it work. Your company all hands meetings are the most expensive meetings and most are poorly run. The goal of an all hands meeting shouldn’t be: -> fun -> bonding -> celebrating “wins” All that is great but it’s secondary to the key goal. The only goal of an all hands meeting is ALIGNMENT. You can never overdo alignment. The single most important thing for any org to thrive is getting this alignment. How can you tell that your org is completely aligned? If your employees were to wake up at night, they should be able to quote the few key KPIs that everyone is focused on. To get this alignment, every all-hands meeting should at least have the following 5 slides. Every. Single. Time. 1. Vision 2. Mission 3. Strategy 4. Critical outcomes 5. Only a FEW key KPIs that show progress towards these critical outcomes.
