Electromagnetic stirring (EMS) uses a variable magnetic field to induce currents in the molten steel, generating a Lorentz force that propels the fluid into motion without direct contact. This motion can be rotational or linear dependent upon the type of stirrer used. Advantages of using EMS in both the mold and the strand include reduced breakout risk, decrease central segregation, expanded central equiaxed zone, and lower central porosity reduction. However, it is challenging to precisely determine the best location to place the stirrer, and the electric input parameters are difficult to calibrate to maximize the quality and output of the material.
