Manjari Chatterjee Miller, CFR [excerpt]: In 1955, the convening of the Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung, Indonesia, marked the first meeting of Global South countries—a designation that originated in the twentieth century. Participants at the conference focused on issues of colonialism and racial discrimination, among other topics. A desire to counter western dominance and interference as well as maintain non-alignment has remained a focus of cooperation among these countries. It was at this conference that #China and #India first began to vie for leadership of the #GlobalSouth. Despite their rise to being two of the largest economies and most powerful countries in the world, both China and India continue to classify themselves as members of the Global South. China has framed itself as an alternative to the United States by heavily investing in developing countries and building infrastructure through the #BeltandRoadInitiative (#BRI). India has tried to garner #influence by positioning itself as an intermediary—understanding Global South interests while simultaneously wielding influence with the United States. Countries in the Global South continue to accept support from both China and India. However, growing friction over issues such as China’s approach to the global debt crisis and India’s obstructionism in international organizations has contributed to building distrust and dislike of both countries. Laos and Thailand had the highest share of respondents picking China, at 78% and 71% respectively. As the report points out, China is Laos’ largest foreign investor as well as its top export market. Filipinos also rated Japan’s economic influence the highest (9%) compared to those surveyed in other ASEAN countries. In 2023, the Southeast Asian bloc celebrated 50 years of friendship with Japan, marking it as one of their most important “dialogue partners.” The EU also received single-percentage responses, its highest share coming from Myanmar (6%), Cambodia (5%), and Laos (4%). Finally, the report contrasted China’s robust economic influence with concerns about its growing impact in the region. Respondents from Vietnam (88%), Myanmar (88%), and Thailand (80%) had the highest levels of concern, despite their countries’ strong trade ties with China.

Emerging Market｜Malaysia applied to join the BRICS group of nations BRICS group are the nations of emerging markets, such as Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, Malaysia recently has applied to join the BRICS group of nations, the country's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Sunday. ? Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia made the remarks during a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov who is on a two-day visit to Malaysia. Russia is this year's rotating chair of the BRICS group. ? The Malaysian prime minister said the potential membership "underscores our commitment to fostering robust international collaboration." ? “We also explored avenues to enhance bilateral cooperation, with a particular focus on strengthening ties in key areas such as investment and trade, science and technology, agriculture, defense and military, education, and tourism and culture," Anwar said. ? For his part, Lavrov said Russia welcomes Malaysia's interest in the group and will help to push for its membership. ? The BRICS emerging-markets group, founded in 2006, until recently was made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. In January, it expanded to include Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. ? The group now has a combined population of about 3.5 billion, or 45% of the world's inhabitants.
