This week, I had the privilege of speaking at the 2024 WBL Summit and launching a new series of educational programs focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion for the WBL (Women Business Leaders of the US Health Care Industry Foundation) membership. The series, created by WBL’s DEI committee, started with a panel discussion where I spoke with these amazing leaders - Sherie Hickman (Sutter Delta Medical Center), Jennifer Paine (Johnson & Johnson), and Jhaymee Tynan (Korn Ferry). I kicked off our discussion by asking the audience to raise their hand if anyone had the words diversity, equity, or inclusion in their titles. Zero hands. I then asked the audience to raise their hand if they believed they had the power to improve diversity, inclusion, and equity in their organization. Every single hand went up ???????????? It was a true testament to the fact that this work is a team sport. It does not sit solely with those that have a specific title or work in a specific department. Our speakers then candidly shared their experiences — all of which follows the rule “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” But they did share some steps we can ALL take to move DEI efforts forward. And those should NOT stay in Vegas, so here they are: ??Educate yourself about the inequities that women and people of color face in advancing their careers. ??When you are in rooms where decisions are being made, look around the table and bring in any voices that are missing. ??Be intentional about messaging - DEI is necessary to ensure successful growth, reputation, recruitment and retention of talent, equitable outcomes, and quality healthcare. ??Sponsor an individual. And if you are already sponsoring individual(s), look at who you are sponsoring and if they look like you, find someone that doesn’t. ??Vote. DEI efforts have been under attack lately and bans on DEI efforts are hitting ballots. Your voice and vote matters. And, thank you to Leslie Hutchings, Catherine Cassidy, and Eleanor Whitley Rosiak for putting this topic on the agenda and for managing all the logistics to make the panel a success! #healthequity #dei

Great day for California Life Sciences (CLS) attending Physicians for a Healthy California, Health Equity Leadership Summit! Panelist, Maria Jison, MD, (Executive Director, Global Clinical Head, Fasenra) of member company AstraZeneca spoke to the strides they've made using their AIRE Mobile Unit as a “clinic on wheels” that brings trial screenings directly to patients in diverse communities. The mobile unit is equipped with exam rooms and staffed with healthcare professionals who are ready to pre-screen patients and book both an appointment and transportation for patients to visit the clinical trial site they’re referred to. Per Maria, "You can't be successful without community engagement and building trust. It's not enough to just show up in a bus.....you really need to be part of the community. A multi-pronged engagement campaign is required. Outreach alone isn't enough — you need to partner with other organizations that are part of the community and trusted." #EquitableResources #PhysiciansForAHealthyCalifornia #HealthEquity

Since 2020, we've witnessed a significant shift as companies, both large and small, have made emphatic commitments to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, heralding what seemed like a true sea change in corporate culture. But today, the very acronym—DEI—is being weaponized and twisted into an insult. We're seeing budgets slashed and organizations turning their backs on what they once heralded as the only way forward. So, does DEI still matter? You better believe it does. More than ever. Despite the setbacks, some organizations are championing DEI with renewed vigor. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is one such beacon of hope. I was honored to serve as a speaker at last week’s AAP National Leadership Conference, where I discussed “Inclusive Leadership in Action: Fostering Intentional Inclusion for Lasting Impact.” This is a topic that is inherent not only to my work in healthcare, but something I try to embody in every aspect of my life. Being an inclusive leader means creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute their best. It involves actively listening, recognizing diverse perspectives, and fostering a culture of collaboration and trust. This can be in our families, our communities, our friend groups. In healthcare, inclusive leadership is crucial. It not only improves team dynamics and morale but also enhances patient care by ensuring that diverse patient needs are understood and met with empathy and competence. Inclusive leadership helps build resilient, innovative, and compassionate healthcare teams and partnerships that can better serve diverse populations. If we continue down the path of ignoring inclusivity, the well-being of our teams and communities is at stake. When DEI initiatives are sidelined, we risk losing the progress we've made towards creating equitable and effective healthcare systems. The health and lives of countless individuals depend on our commitment to these principles. Thursday, September 26th, I attended the B.I.D.E (Belonging, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity) summit - Achieving Tangible Change where we were welcomed by Wendy Olayiwola BEM, FRSA, FRCM, RM, RN FNF Global health Leadership Scholar, and hosted by Shivani Sharma This summit was a profound exploration of the unique challenges and opportunities that the global majority encounter, particularly within the healthcare sector. The summit was filled with powerful discussions led by thought leaders and experts Prof. Kevin Fenton CBE Tina Jegede MBE Kendra Schneller Dr Amanda Young Edna Boampong (FCIM) Paul Deemer Tista Chakravarty-Gannon Evelyn Mensah Kristen Smith Dr Cordelle Ofori FFPH Jon Restell Bernadette T. Shera Chok Tom Emery Russell Jones Alex D’Sa and keynote speaker Prof. Bola Owolabi, MRCGP MFPH(Hon), FRSPH who weren’t afraid to confront the unspoken truths surrounding diversity and equity In healthcare. I walked away from the summit feeling not just inspired, but also empowered, equipped with new knowledge and invaluable connections to positive role models Dr. Aziza Sesay, and Michelle Cox who I have added to my virtual mentors as positive role models and I look to as part of my personal and professional growth from a distance.
