Today is the day! Today we take back ownership of our culture. Today we’re launching our investment crowdfunding campaign at PYNRS Performance Streetwear! We’re tired of corporations borrowing from our culture to seem cool, so we’re taking ownership to the people. The mission of this campaign is to give us all access to ownership opportunities, specifically with PYNRS, so we can continue to be a proud, Black-run (pun intended!) brand that meets the unmet needs of runners of color. Because - did you know: ?? 96% of running industry owners are white ?? Only 1% of senior management are Black We’re bringing Black ownership to an industry where it doesn’t exist. If you believe in that too, become part of the PYNRS? investor family today and when we’re successful, you’ll be successful, too. To owning the future, Sid https://lnkd.in/e3TgPe56

Really glad to see the new Boston XChange initiative from Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday, and Lauren Holiday launch today. With guidance from smart people like Bill Aulet, Segun Idowu + Malia Lazu. Shirley Leung got the scoop for Boston Globe Media. (See link in first comment.) Here's who it's for: "We’re looking for passionate entrepreneurs with for-profit businesses based in Greater Boston who are using creative industries to make a positive contribution in underserved communities." Up to $100,000 in "no strings attached" grant funding for companies that get into the accelerator, over a three year span. Just two thoughts: 1. Two weeks (today until Aug 15th) is a really short application period for a brand new accelerator. 2. Not taking equity in the companies is an ... interesting choice. It's not clear how much $$$ Brown and the Holidays are putting into Boston XChange (he says "millions" in the article)... and so if they wanted a way to perpetuate the program over years or decades, without relying on future donations, taking equity in participating companies, and working to help some of them become massively successful, would've been a good move. What's your take?

Two weeks ago, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit ruled against the Fearless Fund’s Fearless Strivers Grant Contest. Their ruling found that this contest is “substantially likely to violate” the provisions of Title 42 of the US Code, which prohibits race from being a factor when awarding and enforcing contracts. According to CNN: "The appellate court ordered a federal court in Georgia to enter a preliminary injunction blocking the fund from closing its grant application process while the case continues to be litigated .?. . The court’s decision marks a victory for anti-affirmative action legal strategist Edward Blum, who filed a lawsuit last August against the fund on behalf of his group American Alliance for Equal Rights." Shortly after the ruling, Fearless Fund CEO Arian Simone called the court's actions devastating: "I am shattered for every girl of color who has a dream but will grow up in a nation determined not to give her a shot to live it," said Simone. "On their behalf, we will turn the pain into purpose and fight with all our might. America is supposed to be a nation where one has the freedom to achieve, the freedom to earn, and the freedom to prosper. Yet, when we have attempted to level the playing field for underrepresented groups, our freedoms were stifled." While we don't yet know what Simone's next move will be to create a more equitable funding landscape for founders from marginalized communities, we do know that she doesn't quickly back down from a fight. Understand more about the passion, energy and long-term vision that she brings to her mission by listening to the audio recording of her presentation from SXSW 2024 via the link below; https://lnkd.in/gkgBPncg What does the ruling against the Fearless Fund mean for the future for startups led by women and people of color? How can non-traditional founders get a larger slice of the venture capital dollars if not for these kinds of programs? If you have forward-thinking ideas creating a better ecosystem for entrepreneurs of all backgrounds, then you should enter a speaking proposal for SXSW 2025. The speaking proposal process opens on Tuesday, June 25 via the PanelPicker interface. Speaking proposals are accepted through the end of the day on Sunday, July 21. https://lnkd.in/eSXnqtA #funding, #venturecapital, Arian Simone, Fearless Fund, #sxsw, #sxsw2024, #sxsw2025, #DEI, #founders, #founderstories, #entrepreneur, #VC, #panelpicker, #inclusion, #leveltheplayingfield, #diversity, #equity

I recently had a powerful chat with the incredible Cheryl Dorsey, President of Echoing Green, about social entrepreneurs' unique challenges today. As she rightly pointed out, "In the current economic climate, fundraising for entrepreneurs has become increasingly difficult." Too many social innovators- especially those from underrepresented backgrounds - are not receiving the capital they need to scale when they need it most. EG is stepping up to change this through the new Signal Fund. The fund aims to build and de-risk a fresh pipeline of social innovators often overlooked by mainstream philanthropy and financial institutions. It's about helping these proven leaders navigate the "valley of death" that so many startups face, enabling them to hit key milestones recognizable to traditional investors - without compromising their impact. And the need for this work is urgent. Black-led organizations are 24% smaller in revenue than their white-led counterparts, with unrestricted net assets 76% smaller. Startups led by underrepresented founders, including women, receive only 43% of the funding that white male founders do. Grateful to be part of the Echoing Green community, which is making strides toward bridging these gaps. If you’re a social entrepreneur looking to become an EchoingGreen Fellow, applications open TODAY! I’m more than happy to support innovators interested in applying - let’s work together to create the change we want to see! ?? #Funding #SocialImpact #TogetherWeBuild

We all know the saying, "This meeting could have been an email." The AGM (Annual General Meeting) from a VC often fits that mold, but it doesn’t have to. The AGM is a unique opportunity to meet great entrepreneurs and portfolio companies, learn about new trends, and connect with fellow LPs to understand the current funding environment and strategies. Unfortunately, many AGMs are filled with endless, forgettable presentations. That’s why I was pleasantly surprised by Robin Capital‘s recent AGM. Instead of focusing on numbers and slides, the event centered on the people who make and shape the fund. We engaged in deep conversations, participated in joint activities, and built meaningful connections. It was about fostering a community where everyone listened, learned, and supported each other. The founders benefited immensely from the wisdom, experience, and connections of the LPs, and the LPs gained insights into new technologies, approaches, and the latest entrepreneurial trends. Thanks for this great experience, Robin Haak! Picture credit: Claudia Weaver
