I have been debating about making this post for a while, but I thought I would share my experience so far with trying to find a job as a Footwear Designer. I graduated college in 2021, and as of now, I have applied to 6,728 jobs and have not received an offer. I know everyone's first gut reaction is, "What the hell is this kid doing?!" Let me explain. From the start, I was determined to get a job as a footwear designer and focused solely on this goal during my first year of job hunting. Inspired by the classic movies Space Jam and Back to The Future, I dreamed of creating those iconic shoes. Despite about a dozen interviews with various brands for associate/intern/apprenticeship positions, no offers came. In the second year, I broadened my search to adjacent fields like CMF Designers and Product Developers and explored other footwear brands outside the industry leaders. I also heavily reworked my portfolio, improving layout, information, sketching, and more. Though I received a few sporadic interviews, there were still no offers. Year three saw me still jumping around working retail roles while looking for a footwear job. I began to heavily network on LinkedIn, connecting with many friendly and open individuals who provided valuable career advice and feedback on my portfolio. I was surprised and grateful for the wide range of people who responded positively to my cold calls, offering insights into positioning myself better in my job search. Despite about 10 more interviews, I still had no offers. Now, in this current year, I have broadened my career search as much as possible. If I see a position that meets my skills, I apply. I am still determined to find my place as a designer at a footwear brand, continuing to network and improve my portfolio. I’ve had about six interviews so far and am waiting to hear back about further opportunities. I tried to keep this concise as I have a tendency to ramble on. However, I was inspired by seeing others on LinkedIn discuss their experiences with layoffs, extended unemployment, and other challenges in the current job market as designers. I hope this is helpful to others, and perhaps you know someone looking for an ambitious footwear designer. My point is: I have not given up on pursuing a career I am passionate about.

Meet Jeff Melanson, M.S., Associate Category Manager for Lifestyle and Crocs at work in the Product Department. See what a day in the life of Jeffrey is like: "As an Associate Category manager for the Lifestyle and Crocs at work businesses, every day brings something new. The Lifestyle category consists of all different types of shoes - slippers, sneakers, boots, flats... basically anything that isn't a clog or sandal! Since there is so much potential for us to grow in these areas, the foundation of my job is to continue learning about our consumers, study the marketplace, and then work with the designers and developers to create the best possible product for current (and hopefully soon to be!) Crocs lovers. Most of my day consists of meetings reviewing the details of our new products and collaborating to brainstorm around future opportunities." #EmployeeSpotlight #ComeAsYouAre #Product #DayInTheLife #CrocsInc
