I’ve officially passed the first three of our comprehensive examination sections. Our final qualifying component is our dissertation proposal, which will be started next spring! Hoping to connect with academics and researchers who are interested in the following topics: - disability and embodiment in organizations -dignity at work - professions (evolution of roles working with or employing people with disabilities, such as rehabilitation professionals, nurses, occupational therapy, behavioral therapy, disability coordinators, accommodations professionals, etc) - management historical methodology (archival analysis, historiography, text analysis, etc) Please reach out if you’d be open to connecting over the summer for virtual coffee and a chat about your work. I am team get yourself an advocate. My only piece of advise is to not get an attorney. They do not know the culture and terminology of special education. My suggestion is to ask a service provider such as your child's private speech pathologist, psychologist, or a special education teacher. There are so many school psychologist openings across the country right now . ??In IL specifically I continue to ponder why we wait until the 11th hour to begin looking into alternative service providers (contractual psychs) to service the children’s needs . ??When we get to July 1 - schools seem to open their doors to contractual staff for upcoming school year . By this time -it’s too late. Quality candidates have been swooped up by districts which opened their doors in April or May. ??We recognize the importance of hiring within public education- however; when there’s been a vacancy for 1, 2, 3+ years and we continue to wait until July to hire outside of a standard system - the kids, staff, and community are directly affected . ??I will continue to preach and support filling vacancies in whichever way we ethically can. Ours children deserve it ! ??If you want to find psychs in this market - don’t want until July to work with an agency . Advocate for filling the positions in April or May if you have had little to no traction and see how quickly we can help ???? ??I’m hopeful schools will continue to be progressive in their thinking and action to support the ones who matter most in education - the kids .

What’s the biggest challenge school psychologists face today? Burnout. Nationally, its recommended that there be a school psychologist for every 500 to 700 students. If you're applying to the doctorate this year and identify as being from a disadvantaged or marginalised background, and don't have access to a clinical psychologist supervisor, please reach out to me! I'm offering a couple of spaces to support individuals with their doctorate application. I am very aware of the privelege and vicious cycle that exists in this field whereby many people are not in a position to work for free for Assistant Psychologist posts (not that honorary posts should exist at all in my view), are discriminated against in applying for relevant work experience or academia, or might not have access to other professionals who can assist with the process. I want to level the playing field and encourage much-needed diversity in our profession. Please comment below as unfortunately it’ll be a first-come first-served situation. This shortfall is causing further delays in EHCPS and vital support for vulnerable children, placing immense strain on schools and parents and local authorities.
