When bad design is “good”. Think about the last time you encountered something with notably poor design—something that left you frustrated or amused by its impracticality? Maybe it was a cup that dribbled no matter how carefully you drank from it, or a chair that felt like sitting on concrete. Bad design surrounds us, from minor annoyances to more significant flaws that impact our daily lives. At Wemaygo, we've observed a prominent instance of this in Canadian public bathrooms: the notorious gap between stall doors and walls. It's an uncomfortably awkward experience to accidentally make eye contact through these gaps, highlighting a significant design oversight.?The attached image shows a perfect example of just how dramatic some of these gaps can be! When evaluating design, it's essential to consider three perspectives: desirability, feasibility, and viability. Desirability focuses on user preferences and needs. In the case of bathroom stalls, users desire privacy. While these stalls technically provide privacy, the gaps fail to meet the necessary level of discretion, thus falling short on the desirability perspective. Feasibility assesses whether a design is technically achievable within given constraints. Concerns in this example may include airflow requirements, compliance with building codes, and accessibility standards. However, we know that complete privacy in bathroom stalls is feasible, as demonstrated in many European countries’ public bathrooms. Addressing these gaps is feasible; so now we ask what impediments prevent it? Viability examines the economic and business aspects of a design. The current stall design is economically efficient, easy to maintain, and discourages loitering. However, prioritizing financial viability has overshadowed user comfort in this instance, highlighting a discrepancy between what's financially sound and what's best for users.? Encountering instances of poor design challenges us to rethink interactions with our environment and expectations from everyday objects. It encourages innovation and problem-solving. Bad design, though often frustrating, can spark creativity—a moment where dissatisfaction turns into inspiration. While this example concerns a lighthearted inconvenience, deeper issues of exclusion and safety due to poor design exist elsewhere—an important topic for another discussion. Trends in Crematorium Design by Mark Doohan, CBCE 2023 A short bit of history... I think we’re in a wave of new crematoria emerging across the UK. When we went to some architectural awards, there were three new crematoria all being nominated for national design awards and that’s something I’ve never seen before. I think when I was a student there was one project in university where you had to design a crematorium and that was because it was such a poetic idea, creating spaces for people at the end of life, for people who were still alive to remember their loved ones. Historically there have been two key phases of crematoria being built across the UK, in that first period between 1902 when Golders Green was put up. In 1904 there were just nine operating in the UK and then we had a period of expansion over twenty years and the lead up to WW2, by which point there were about twenty-five being built within three years. Then there was a period of not many crematoria being built until we got to the 60’s after the war. In 1952 there was the first kind of design standards by the Government around what should be in a crematorium and how they should be designed. Following that, there was an unlocking of new crematoria over a 17-year period. Because this is becoming our area of expertise, we’ve done a body of research using the Cremation Society’s 'Directory of Crematoria', which lists all the statistics from all the crematoria across the UK. As architects, we think 3-dimensionally so we took it upon ourselves to turn this into a useful document for reference, so if a customer comes to us asking for a crematorium for 60 people in a space then we know that we can make this space for 60 people, it will change the size of all these spaces relatively so that we know what size of office function is needed to support a crematorium of that size; how many parking spaces, what the flower court should be, all those kinds of things. We take that data that you can all get hold of, and we turn it into something that can spatially be used. If you’re thinking about a new crematorium, or if you have an existing one and you want to adapt it then an architect should be taking this data, turning it into a flow diagram, thinking about which spaces should be adjacent to other spaces so that the flow for the bereaved and the families is simple. And, that the back-of-house function is smooth and that those two functions do not unnecessarily overlap with each other. In terms of trends in design, it’s important that aside from all that research, you’re listening to your customer and you’re hearing from your customer. The customer in my instance for the design of a building is made up of different stakeholders, and in this instance, there are quite a lot of stakeholders. We have a bereaved family and their experience of a building, we have the operations team, we have a technical facility and then we have funeral directors coming back and forth from the facilities.

“Enduring Lessons: How Robin Day’s Polypropylene Chair Shaped My Education and Design Philosophy” The polypropylene stacking chair, designed by Robin Day in 1963, is more than a mass-produced object; it’s a cultural artifact embedded deeply into many lives and, in my case, into my education. At Charterhouse, where I was schooled, this chair was a staple—functional, unassuming, and yet surprisingly enduring. Its lightweight form and ability to stack effortlessly made it ideal for the constant reconfigurations of school spaces. And, like the island of Charterhouse itself, which stood as a microcosm of both learning and discipline, the chair became an everyday witness to our education, a quiet presence in classrooms, assembly halls, and beyond. Day’s design was deceptively simple. With an injection-molded polypropylene frame, it fulfilled the Hille brief for an affordable, versatile, and enduring piece of furniture. By 1965, it had won the Council of Industrial Design award, and soon enough, its variations spread into nearly every imaginable setting: schools, hospitals, airports, arenas—places where function must meet durability. The chair could be found everywhere and adapted into everything: from the rugged Series E for children, which I remember being slightly smaller and ideal for quick transport, to outdoor-friendly versions like the Polo, which allowed for airflow in summer heat. Reflecting on the chair now, it strikes me that its very utility mirrors the sometimes stark nature of a traditional British education. There is, in the chair’s design, a raw honesty: it doesn’t seek to be decorative or luxurious but rather steadfastly functional. Perhaps this is why it inspired my own work—its directness of purpose resonated with my approach to architecture and design, valuing both practicality and presence. As an architect, referencing a tool from my own education brings a unique challenge. There is a risk in trying to honour such a simple, ubiquitous object without veering into sentimentality or, worse, idealizing the tools of our past in a way that neglects the needs of the present. This concept of external referencing in design asks us to re-examine the educational objects that molded us. The polypropylene chair might be overlooked as “just a chair,” but its design legacy speaks to a larger story about purpose, accessibility, and longevity. It’s a reminder that great design often exists not in lavish materials or ornate lines but in the quiet utility that serves without fanfare—a lesson perhaps not only for the objects we create but for the life lessons these objects quietly imparted. Meet John Newland, President, Green Furniture Concept, Americas. ??Tell us, how did you and Green Furniture Concept find each other? I started on a consulting assignment, where we were to identify how Green could grow the business in the US. We delivered an analysis and a plan going forward that was very well received. They believed in what we saw, and as I was offered to be President of Green Furniture Concept in Americas. I was hesistant, it wasn’t really in my plans, but I’d fallen in love with the products. And when I met the team, we really clicked. I’ve also grown up with wood, and worked a lot with wood at Herman Miller, so in some sense it was a bit like coming home. ??What have you done prior to Green? I’m an architect and designer and have spent my life selling concepts. In some sense you could say I’m a translator between design and sales. Before joining Green I’ve worked as consultant for several design firms, and for many years I was the VP of Architecture and Design at Herman Miller. I’ve also introduced European design to the American market as Vice President for IFC, International Contract Furnishings. I have a passion for the design of products. Looking at Green Furniture Concept’s furniture – it is art, but it also functional. ??What is happening on the public space arena in North America? Any trends you want to share with us? It’s unusual times in the furniture world. There is this generation of workers that say “we don’t need to come to an office”. For those who come back after all, they want their own cubicles. But they also want meeting spaces. The same applies to those coming from universities into professional life. They want common meeting places, like they had when they were studying, regardless of the industry they start working in. We also have many property owners in our city centers having the challenge of filling empty premises on the street level. They want to create places where people can meet. Buildings died during covid. Our furniture creates an energy, and can turn them into active and purposeful environments. People want to be with other people, and they want beautiful places where they can meet. ??Do you have a favourite Green product, and if yes, which and why? I love them all. I’m not comparing them to each other because each of them has its purpose. ??And one last question, what would be your dream location for our furniture? It would have to be at The Museum of Modern Art, MoMa in NYC. The perfect location.
