Both existing natural gas and liquid pipelines have been proposed for conversion to hydrogen service as part of the move to Green Energy. Understanding the previous operation of these pipelines is key to determining their suitability for conversion. This includes an in-depth understanding of the integrity history of a given asset, including latent anomalies, with the impact of hydrogen being assessed against each integrity threat. The consensus is that introducing hydrogen will negatively impact ductility, fracture toughness, and increase fatigue crack growth rate, even at relatively low concentrations of hydrogen. Fluid-7 membrane barrier pipe relining solutions allows for cost effective conversion and repurposing of existing pipeline assets to carry higher concentrations of Hydrogen.

New entrant Cleanova has recently secured a contract to supply filtration systems for a multi-billion-dollar blue hydrogen facility in Louisiana, set to commence in 2026. The facility will produce over 750 million standard cubic feet per day of blue hydrogen and blue ammonia, capturing and sequestering 95% of its carbon dioxide emissions (and over 5 million tons annually) in Louisiana, making it the world’s largest carbon capture and sequestration project in development.
