Are we seeing the beginning of a likely downward trend of schools purchasing #SchoolSecurity hardware, products, and technology? As federal Covid funds disappear and school budgets continue to tighten, it is reasonable to expect that the lack of federal pandemic money and the one-time #schoolsafety grants will not provide the needed long-term sustainability for implementing these programs with fidelity. In the story by IPVM linked below, a leading school security #WeaponsDetection company reportedly is cutting staff, struggling with declining sales, and under two for federal investigations. #SchoolLeaders need to be critical thinkers and take tactical pause before making knee-jerk reactions into purchasing security hardware, products, and technology in response to high profile incident and community pressures.

"I like this technology but…It's not in the budget" ? How often do you have to say this to your account teams? Or hear it from your customers? ? With 1-2 year budget cycles (and the rapid advancement in technology), its extremely hard to predict what will be relevant and necessary in the future. One awesome thing about working in the public sector is that there are tons of grants available to our customers and we have public funding teams to help find them. ? Grants can be a great way to get funding for a project that is not in the budget, and most organizations have a grant writing team. They don’t often work with IT, but why not? ? A great technology grant available to school districts is the COPS School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP). This is a federal grant for school safety - this money can be spent on Cameras, sensors, smart locks, lighting, metal detectors, etc… Additionally, a third round of ESSER funding is available. ? There is no reason why this safety money cant also be used to make these systems SMARTER. You can have the best cameras in the world, but if there are no analytics to quickly correlate events, you may be missing out on valuable data, and often time, in an emergency. The same goes for door open/close sensors, air quality sensors, and smart buttons (remember Alyssa's law?). Sensors can even be connected to a camera to further correlate data and cut down investigation time. ? Cisco Meraki has a whole line of Cameras and Sensors that are great for school safety and surveillance. We are also bringing new features to the Meraki Vision Portal, like Attribute Search, where you can search for footage based on clothing colors and vehicle types. Further cutting down on investigation time to keep students safe on campus.

I am proud to see Flock Safety making a real difference in campus security! Temple University is the first university in Pennsylvania to implement Flock’s License Plate Reader (LPR) cameras, and the results are already impressive. Within just two weeks of installation, the cameras helped Temple police recover a stolen vehicle and arrest the suspect by capturing critical vehicle data in real-time. Flock Safety’s technology enhances safety while protecting privacy. Our LPR cameras focus solely on vehicles and license plates—no facial recognition is involved. Plus, with data encryption and automatic deletion after 30 days, we ensure privacy is protected at every step. Temple is joining a growing list of universities, including UNC, UT, and University of Delaware, that trust Flock Safety to help keep their campuses secure. As crime knows no boundaries, our technology is a vital tool for open and urban campuses like Temple’s, providing law enforcement with the actionable insights they need to respond quickly and effectively. We’re proud to be part of the solution as universities nationwide work to create safer environments for students, faculty, and staff. https://lnkd.in/dadhinMH #FlockSafety #CampusSecurity #PublicSafety #Innovation #Technology #PrivacyProtection #campuspolice

Physical Security is a concern for K-12 public school districts, and rightly so! Thankfully, there are tools and programs out there to help- one being the School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP). What is the SVPP? As part of the STOP School Violence Act of 2018, the COPS office (a division of the US Dept of Justice) is authorized to provide awards directly to States, units of local government, and K-12 public school districts. $73,000,000 is available in FY2024, with up to $500,000 for an individual award, with a local cost share of 25%. What can these funds be used for? This grant is very technology friendly, and provides funding for a variety of school security-related solutions, such as surveillance cameras, door access controls, notification systems, and more to improve the overall security at schools. What are the timelines for SVPP? The program is currently open. Grants.gov deadline for submittal is June 11, 2024, and JustGrants deadline is June 17, 2024. How does an organization apply? Follow the helpful tips on the "How to Apply Page" linked here: https://lnkd.in/gzyHN4jA And if you're wondering about Cisco solutions that fit into this grant, refer to the Campus Safety Reference Architecture shown below, then check out the Cisco Portfolio Explorer around Intelligent Campus and Physical Safety, linked here: https://lnkd.in/g42dc2ua SVPP Program Page: https://lnkd.in/gXzQ2-Ae

In 2023, Florida became the first state in the country to ban cell phones during instructional time. In 2024, school districts and several states across the country are taking the next step to create phone-free schools It’s really simple: states should give kids 7 hours of phone-free time each day to focus on learning and less on notifications. It’s a win-win-win for teachers, students, and parents.
Phone-free schools? Chancellor David Banks says to expect a ban soon
