This month, I had the opportunity to participate in and complete the United States Institute of Peace, Gandhi-King Global Academy’s “Synergizing Nonviolent Action and Peacebuilding” Instructor-Led Certificate Program. In this course, I learned the fundamentals of synergizing nonviolent action and peace and its application. Specifically, this program discussed concepts and provided opportunities for practical application of nonviolent action and peace building, power and conflict transformation, strategic planning and conflict analysis, nonviolent action tactics and peace building approaches, and plans for action.

For the seventh story of our reframing crime narratives series, I wrote about GoodKids MadCity’s peacekeeping pilot program. There’s a prevailing narrative about youth, particularly Black youth, in Chicago: they are unfairly over-generalized, demonized, and stigmatized by society. GKMC, through its mission and peacekeeping program, is flipping that notion on its head and equipping young people with the skills to be peacemakers in their communities. https://lnkd.in/geikHsp3

"It's more important than ever that we give young people the knowledge and skills to be able to challenge what they see online." We were so pleased to hear our new Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson say that children need to learn how to spot fake news and disinformation and that this will be built into the curriculum review. Managing what goes on to social media is only one part of the story, young people need to develop the skills to navigate the increasingly complex world they encounter online. SINCE 9/11 know that developing critical thinking skills and being able to spot disinformation, fake news and conspiracy theories on social media is key to building resilience against extremism. This is why we offer schools a student workshop exploring what would have been different if there was social media at the time of the attacks on 11th September 2001. ?? Today, I completed "An Introduction to the UN System and Its Role in International Peace and Security." This insightful course, led by Major General (Retired) Robert Gordon, explored the intricate web of the UN, highlighting the importance of integration among its diverse components in addressing global challenges. From understanding the UN's principal organs to delving into the ethics of field missions, the knowledge gained is invaluable for any aspiring UN practitioner. I'm excited to apply this learning to contribute to peacekeeping and security efforts. #UN #Peacekeeping #InternationalRelations

“The new materials also include a focus on masculinities and the impact of gender stereotypes, including how to challenge outdated gender roles like men must be ‘tough’, or ‘stoic.’ It's vital that we're working with young men and boys in constructive ways to promote healthy and positive ways of being a man,” - I wonder, have private schools read this? Or are some private schools run by flat-earthers, refusing to accept the research, evidence & truth. While schools enforce rigid gender stereotypes on children in schools, they fail to create inclusive, equitable, learning environments. Such environments are not conducive to helping a child reach their full potential, and are not psychologically safe. While the governance & legislation enables the perpetuation of sexism, discrimination, & outdated norms, the systems & political leaders fail to enable a safe, inclusive, equitable school system. To prevent gender-based violence, to reduce the gender pay gap, & to eliminate coercive control, we need to address gender inequality & inequity. Schools that are forcing rigid gender norms are building the next generation of inequality & inequity. Which will happen first? Will private schools step up & do the right thing as a system? Some individual schools already are, even though they don’t have to. Or will we address governance at a systemic level, holding all schools, including private schools, to the same set of ethical, equitable, inclusive standards. If taxpayer funding is attached, there should be no exemption. The race is on! What do you think? We love to see the fruition of our hard work. But it is especially rewarding to be able to use our skills to enhance the work of dedicated organizations like Global Center on Cooperative Security and Rights and Security International. In 2023, the Global Center on Cooperative Security and Rights & Security International consulted with nearly 200 peacebuilding and P/CVE implementers, human rights defenders, activists, lawyers, journalists, researchers, community leaders, and scholar-practitioners from around the world, assisted by an advisory committee of 15 diverse civil society representatives. The resulting report offers a framework and recommendations for the UN and its Member States to meaningfully engage civil society while incrementally addressing the preconditions for engagement. It is always a sincere pleasure to work with the Global Center on designing and laying out their publications, and this one is no exception.
