?? Exciting News! ?? A monumental UN resolution was passed by the UN General Assembly, declaring June 11 as the International Day of Play. This significant milestone aims to raise global awareness about the power of play and its vital role in children's lives. Play is not just a pastime; it is a fundamental right for every child. Play is essential to children's development, fostering creativity, imagination, and emotional well-being. By dedicating a day to celebrate and advocate for play, we are emphasizing its importance in shaping a brighter future for our children. So what can you do on the International Day of Play? I can think of three things anyone can contribute: 1?? Spread the Word: Share the news about the International Day of Play across your social networks! 2?? Engage in Playful Activities: Whether it's organizing local play events, volunteering at schools or community centres, or simply spending quality time with your own children, every interaction counts. 3?? Voice Out for Play: Find out how playful your community is and identify what is stopping children to play freely and safely. Talk to relevant decision-makers, see what we can do to make play more inclusive for all children! What else? Tell me what you think!

Today is the first-ever International Day of Play, marking a significant milestone in efforts to preserve, promote, and prioritize playing so that all people, especially children, can reap the rewards and thrive to their full potential. ??♀? For children in particular, play helps build relationships and improves control, overcome trauma, and problem-solving. It helps children develop the cognitive, physical, creative, social, and emotional skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. ??♂? Moreover, play is considered to have a positive impact on promoting tolerance, resilience, and facilitating social inclusion, conflict prevention, and peacebuilding. In recognition of this, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has enshrined play as a fundamental right of every child. ???♀? This international day creates a unifying moment at global, national, and local levels to elevate the importance of play. THE ROLE OF A YOUTH MINISTER is not to have, create, or strengthen a group. The Role of the Youth Minister is to strengthen the Network of Parish groups, organizations, and ministries that work with Children, Youth, and Young Adults, then create groups that fit the patterns of vocations needed to serve those within your Parish Boundaries. If you are still calling your youth group a "youth ministry", you have lost the purpose of "Renewing the Vision", which inspired us as Youth Ministers to replicate the PARISH, so that your youth would carry the Church to the Future. Isn't that the reason why we say, "Youth are the Future of the Church", or the "Church Today"? So let's build it... Today we get to celebrate the inaugural International Day of Play! ?? The United Nations General Assembly got together and made the 11th of June the International Day of Play - because they believe (and so do we) that every child can reach their full potential, with the time, space and access to play. 97% of children believe play is important yet one in three do not have the time to play. To change this, children are asking adults and decision-makers to: ? Invest in children’s well-being by protecting their right to play. ? Provide children with more time and opportunities to play, including in school. ? Protect their right to play by creating safe and accessible places to play, including for those with special needs. ? Respect their rights to be heard in decisions impacting their right to play. ? Support them in developing social skills through play. Do you have a Black Lives Matter sign in front of your house? If you have kids, do your kids know what Black Lives Matter means to you? Your sign offers a great opportunity to talk to your kids about white supremacy. ? Do your kids know that the police do not act in a vacuum? Fear, control and violence are part of the construction and maintenance of the structure of white supremacy in America. Our police departments grew directly out of slave patrols. They act as a critical part of the control and violence that upholds unequal and unjust outcomes for communities of color. I’m not anti-police. I’ll be the first one to call 911 in an emergency. And I have once experienced the relief and joy of knowing the police were there to protect me (I barely remember the danger, but I remember the feeling of being protected - it was amazing). I also know that involving the police means that anyone who looks like me is in greater danger. I know that anyone with mental health difficulties, autism, or other developmental deficits, is in greater danger. And I believe it doesn’t have to be this way. I believe if we can talk to each other and our kids about race, we can build better, safer police departments and a better, safer country.
