“This field is about connecting people to their shared origin and seeing that we’re all connected by ancient behaviors that evolved millions of years ago." This is the goal of two Cleveland Museum of Natural History anthropologists who have dedicated their research to answering the profound question, "What does it mean to be human?" Their successful research expedition coincides with CMNH's $150 million museum transformation project, opening in December. ?

Great news Natural History Museum ?? "The Natural History Museum in London has announced a major programme of transformation it says will mark “a step-change from being a catalogue of natural history to a catalyst for change” in response to the climate emergency." Cultural spaces have so much power in shaping the world, and this announcement shows such a good example of understanding this, harnessing the power of culture to mobilise the changes we want (and need!) to see in the world #CultureTakesAction https://lnkd.in/giYp-g6d

After nearly a year's worth of work, I'm pleased to announce the release of this report on the various audiences who are assumed to benefit from the dozens of digital transformations projects funded through the European initiative CHANSE, Collaboration of Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe. ? The report analyses the results of 1700+ responses to questions about CHANSE Transformations audiences and associated knowledge exchange activities for those audiences. ? We consider what knowledge exchange means to different people, and trends and omissions in understandings of audiences (e.g., the languages they speak, their perceived degrees of confidence with digital technologies, the contexts in which they work with CHANSE projects, etc). ? We reflect on opportunities to connect projects together and deepen approaches to audience engagement. ? We also discuss gaps which may threaten the impact of existing knowledge exchange plans in CHANSE projects, and which limit potential positive outcomes. ? We conclude with specific measures that CHANSE teams can take in supporting audiences and growing knowledge exchange. ? Importantly, we also reflect on the wider systemic issues that hamper knowledge exchange and demand a concerted response from funders and organisations governing European research and development. Among other points, we recommend, ? nurturing knowledge exchange advocates at the senior levels of project teams ? supporting future digital transformations initiatives in innovating with knowledge exchange itself based on the unique affordances of the digital ? offering guidance on climate-sensitive approaches to knowledge exchange (KE) – and understanding of the climate implications of different KE activities – to allow projects to develop more environmentally-conscious knowledge exchange opportunities ? pursuit of a deeper understanding of the socio-economic, institutional, and national research and development cultures which shape attitudes towards knowledge exchange, in order to inform more nuanced approaches in the future Thanks to the 100s of CHANSE project team members who’ve liaised with us, as well as to our funders ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council and those overseeing our research, including Dr Jamie Davies, Monika Huńka and Malwina G?balska. This report is a collaborative output made possible by the many contributions of Dr. Anna Simandiraki-Grimshaw, Ayesha Purcell, Blen Taye G., Jemima Dunnett, and Kit Ackland.

What the Origins of Humanity Can and Can’t Tell Us There’s still much to be learned about our prehistory. But we can’t help using it to explain the societies we have or to justify the ones we want. “Such stories about human origins are appealing because they explain the societies we have or justify the ones we want. Yet considerations of human history across the very longue durée have also prompted dismal projections, and these exert a magnetic attraction of their own. In the Second World War, technology, long held up by archeologists as the yardstick of human progress, became indelibly linked with mass destruction. […] However much we’ve learned about the origins of humanity, it has become dangerously easy to bring about its end.” By Maya Jasanoff https://lnkd.in/esmjzngh #history #technology #humanity

??Recent stone tool discoveries are prompting a reassessment of the cultural evolution of Homo sapiens during their spread across Eurasia around 50,000 to 40,000 years ago. ??This research, from a study led by the Nagoya University Museum in Japan, challenges the prevailing view of a swift cultural and technological ‘revolution’ that enabled modern humans to surpass Neanderthals and other archaic human species. ??Instead, it suggests a more intricate and gradual process of cultural evolution.

? What makes an environment extreme? ?? Why do humans live and look for such an environment? ???How do humans adapt to such environments collectively? We’ll take a deep dive into these and more questions on April 11, 2024, with our “Beyond Earth | Exploring Life in Extreme Conditions” event. The event invites you for a voyage through art, extreme environments, and, finally, space habitation. For a decade, Séverin Guelpa led the collective MATZA on a journey through three different extreme environments: the Mojave Desert, the Aletsch Glacier and a “superstructure”. Their exploration was fueled by a desire to reconsider ways of living together, reflecting the aspiration of a society in profound transformation. Stemming from this, the definition of extreme conditions, the challenges, the solutions, and people's psychological mindsets make up the center of their artwork. The event on April 11 combines their insights with a further extreme environment. Space. One of the most extreme environments known to humanity. First, Séverin Guelpa and Anja Wyden Guelpa will present their art and thoughts through an art installation, and then a panel discussion with space and anthropology experts will follow. Will you join us? ??? Get your free tickets here: https://lnkd.in/gt_8EpvT

ANAMED Lecture: From One Land to Another: Land Frontiers and Maritime Frontiers in the Early Byzantine World Prof. Enrico Zanini and Dr. Luca Zavagno have made substantial scholarly contributions to Early and Middle Byzantine studies, greatly enhancing the existing literature on cities, economies, and defense. Their seminal analyses encompass a wide geographical range and incorporate various methodological approaches ranging from archaeology to history. In the forthcoming discussion, these two scholars will explore a shared theme that has significantly impacted their academic endeavors: the encounter with the frontier. Specifically, they will investigate the intricate relationship between the frontier and linear or non-linear borders, a common thread linking their research. Selected case studies will allow them to explore diverse degrees of permeability within both tangible and conceptual boundaries. Further attention will also be directed towards the diverse defense mechanisms employed by the Byzantine Empire, spanning territories on land and sea across Italy, the Balkans, and significant Mediterranean islands like Cyprus and Sicily. Simultaneously, in their discussion of the Byzantine frontier, Zanini and Zavagno consistently delve into the cultural perceptions of the “other,” a fundamental aspect of border identity frequently echoed in their respective research. The speakers will analyze the connections and differences within their work using complementary and interwoven methodologies. Ultimately, by examining four decades of frontier studies, this discussion seeks to provide an opportunity to explore past, present, and future research directions in this field.
