FWV, together in partnership with moss+ross, is proud to be a part of Forever Home, Durham’s mission to provide affordable housing. We attended a groundbreaking ceremony for Phase III of the Lofts at Southside in Durham. Once complete, Phase III and IV will provide 100 affordable housing units to families at 60% AMI or below. This project not only welcomes home those in need, but also revitalizes a historical neighborhood, building a brighter future for all Durham residents.

I dream of owning a home simply for the stability it would bring. Without stronger renter protections, families like mine live with a lot of uncertainty. Right now, renting makes the most sense for us. We can rent our beautiful house for $3,600 a month, while buying it would mean a mortgage of over $8,000 a month—money we just don't have. By renting, we get to live in this wonderful community, and still afford groceries, baseball, and gymnastics for our kids. We're choosing to enjoy a high quality of life now, even if it means sacrificing some financial security for our future. Our property owners are fantastic and tell us we can stay as long as we want, but things can change in an instant, and without a legal document like a lease, those words are meaningless. What I wish for are long-term leases—20 or 30 years—with negotiated CPI rate hikes. These leases would provide true stability for families. There are successful models around the world that we could learn from. None of them are perfect, but all of them are worth learning more about. Germany for example offers 99-year leases that can be transferred to family members, providing long-term security. The 1.2 million home challenge for the next government to deliver the places that are needed for people to live, with particular challenges in the South East, is set out in this superb but deeply concerning research that was developed by our team at SNG alongside Paul Chamberlain and supported by the members of CASE (a group of South East housing associations). It was fantastic to work with Sean Worth, Jade Azim, and Paul Chamberlain on this important if worrying report that was also featured in The Times last week. While Labour has committed to building and to targets, it is clear that these targets will need to be stretching and come alongside a wider long-term housing strategy to deliver the homes that are needed. #UKhousing #planningreform

‘Co-operative housing is an important part of a diverse housing sector, and we are delighted to see co-operative housing now reflected as a mainstream housing pathway in the State of the Housing System Report (2024)’ - from CEHL Managing Director Liz Thomas. The report acknowledges ‘housing cooperatives?as an emerging form of tenure’ and notes the emergence of alternative housing ownership models to address the imbalance of housing supply and demand for renters and buyers. These include build-to-rent, rent-to-buy, shared equity and co-operative schemes. CEHL has worked with partners in the Australian Co-operative Housing Alliance (ACHA) and Business Council of Co-operatives and Mutuals (BCCM) to advocate for co-operatives as a globally recognised structure used by people around the world to attain housing security. We will continue to work to with sector partners to further influence housing policy and take this opportunity to scale up the Australian co-operative housing model. https://lnkd.in/g-_Zt-tu

Someone in the comments stated the Villa at Titusville is already beginning to show signs of decay and destruction. Birmingham Housing Authority just like City of Birmingham provides housing for the least likely to excel beyond government dependency to becoming productive and sustainable citizens. Both BHA and the City of Birmingham the two entities support young women with dependent children instead of citizens who are working towards earning a higher education, entrepreneurs, and middle age to older people. The Birmingham Housing Authority and the City of Birmingham place the wrong type of people in new housing, and the citizens who take pride and care of their housing and homes are displaced and put on the back of waiting lists for housing and emergency rental assistance. Therefore, the new new communities built and in the blueprint phase will in five to ten years decay and begin to look like yesterday’s government housing projects.
