In today’s fast-paced supply chain landscape, agility is essential. Recent disruptions in ocean shipping have highlighted the need for a flexible and responsive supply chain strategy. Events like the Red Sea crisis and the Panama Canal drought have caused delays and cost increases, revealing the limitations of traditional models. Ocean Market Disruptions The past year has seen severe disruptions. Attacks on vessels in the Red Sea forced ships to reroute around Africa, increasing fuel, insurance, and charter fees by up to $1 million per vessel. The Panama Canal’s dry year reduced daily vessel passages from 38 to 24, straining global shipping further. Container Shortages and Rising Rates Longer routes and reduced capacity have led to container shortages. Bad weather in major Asian ports has slowed operations, leading to fewer empty containers returned to China. This imbalance is evident in the Ocean TEU Rejection Index, showing increased container volume rejections. Freight rates have soared, with the cost of a 40-foot container rising to $4,226, a 151% increase from last year. The Need for Agile Supply Chains These disruptions underscore the need for agility. Attended the webinar on “ Smart Solutions for Freight” hosted by Transporeon (current workplace). Moderated by Adrian Gonzalez of Talking Logistics fame with expert panelists on North American Frieght Market. Mike Mulqueen alluded to the nature of relationship between carriers and shippers being adversarial. The current cycle of low freight rates is a response from shippers to the Covid-19 market conditions. If we consider spot freight to be a commoditised service where relationships dominate the commerce among carriers and shippers. This advesarial structure of commerce leads to a zero-sum practices as highlighted in the talk. What if the Shippers and carriers could be opportunistic in every market condition but also be mutually benefitting. The systemic setup to enable positive sum transactions is what our work gears towards. We had our colleague Eric Johnson articulate this much better in the Webinar when he mentioned our offerings. The below graphs from the ALICE, Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe (ETP LOGISTICS) whitepaper have been discussed at the Duisburg conference of the The European Freight and Logistics Leaders' Forum yesterday. While the audience was wondering why #modalshift doesn′t take place a good set of the answers is here. Worth looking at, let me share three examples with you: A. Lack of integration into other supply chain solutions: The shippers (green bar) are simply left out of the picture, any exchange of information misses the BCO out. B. Lack of connections - as we can see the LSP (red bar) seems to know many connections the shipper isn′t made aware of. Why? C: Trustworthy ETA: We can ask why the LSP has a much better perception about the quality of the ETA compared to his customer? Try to find the answers and fix it, then #intermodal transport can progress even though infrastructure remains an issue and EU directives might not be in favor. Please share your thoughts here!
