For the first time, a national database will catalogue policies affecting transgender and nonbinary students at more than 400 U.S. universities and colleges. This past summer, SPH's Sarah Lipson recruited a team of students from SPH to support the launch of the novel LGBTQ+ policy tracking initiative. “Being involved in this project is a way for me to use my voice as a researcher, public health professional, and LGBTQ+ ally to draw attention to the serious harms and consequences of anti-trans attitudes and legislation," says MPH student Becca Rohac. May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. How are you celebrating our AAPI neighbors, family members, colleagues and community members this month (and all year)? Three recommendations: 1. Check out the work of the The Asian Community Fund at the Boston Foundation and follow my colleague, Danielle Kim. 2. Read the current issue of Boston Spirit Magazine and specifically the article on community funds in support of the LGBTQ+ community, including a new fund launched in the Merrimack Value thanks to Julie Chen & Susu Wong. 3. Finally, read this piece that came out last year that centers LGBTQ+ mental health and the AAPI experience.

Are you proud of what you did for LGBTQ+ teachers, learners, and other staff this #Pride2024? ????? What's next in your game plan for year-long support for our community? ????? Do you need help?

Socialization is a one of the main benefits of public school. It's the opportunity to learn from others, engage and form connections with your peers. A child learns to respectful interaction with people who are different from them. This is pretty basic but fundamental. Diversity, equity, and inclusion is not just theory. It has practical application. The teachers and the school administration have to facilitate this learning, because they have been conditioning the opposite for far too long. Denying one child the opportunity to demonstrate faith and leadership doesn't need the reference to a LGBT group for support. We can't teach what we don't know and we can't advocate for equity and support negativity. We are the role models for goodness sake! Your children's role models are not phantom people on TV.?They are watching you.

Did you know only 21 states (along with Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico), have anti-bullying laws that specifically protect students of diverse sexual orientations or gender identities? In 2023, 70% of LGBTQ+ youth reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety, and more than half showed signs of depression. An inclusive and equitable school environment is essential for the health and academic success of LGBTQ+ students.
