???????? ???????? ?? ???? ???????????? ???????? ???? ?????? ???????????? ??????dy ???????? ??? 1 in 2 people will get cancer in their lifetime but nothing prepares you for hearing those words from someone you love. ?? Just before Christmas 2023, our lovely mum, sister and step-mum were diagnosed with 2 different types of breast cancer, one of which is the most aggressive type of breast cancer, triple negative, which urgently needs more funding to search for new targeted treatments. There are many things you feel when you hear someone close to you has cancer, but the main feeling is helplessness. Everything is out of your control, and you have no choice but to put all your faith in the amazing cancer care team who are helping and caring for your loved one. Raising money towards the fight against cancer was something we could control and will hopefully give a massive belly laugh to Gemma (and everyone else) whilst we drag ourselves around a 5k muddy assault course. My Team, Simply The Breast (Vikki, Olivia, Holly, Elliot, Alex, Mia, Liam, and Mia), is joining forces to raise as much as possible to help continue CancerResearch UK's amazing work. It’s a time to reflect on my journey and share the invaluable lessons I’ve learned along the way. I will be sharing these periodically throughout the month. Navigating the challenges of breast cancer was no easy feat. Every decision, from diagnosis to treatment options, was fraught with uncertainty and vulnerability. The choices we face can feel overwhelming, and it’s normal to feel lost at times. I remember grappling with questions like: “What’s the right treatment for me?” or “How will this impact my loved ones?” These moments of doubt can be some of the toughest and scariest to navigate. But throughout this journey, I discovered the power of community, faith and support. I leaned on my family, friends, and healthcare professionals, who provided guidance and comfort when I needed it most. It was a reminder that vulnerability is not a weakness; it’s a part of being human. To anyone currently facing breast cancer, know that you are not alone. Reach out, seek support, and trust yourself to make the decisions that feel right for you. I am always available to listen if you need someone. This October, let’s raise our voices, share our stories, and continue to advocate for awareness, education, and support for those affected by breast cancer. Together, we can inspire hope and strength in one another. ?? A personal plug here…. Too many people from my past have lost the fight to cancer. Too many mothers have lost children, too many friends have lost friends, and now, in my present, I watch as my mum becomes increasingly beaten down by this horrible disease. She was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer in March last year and has undergone surgery and rounds of chemotherapy. My mum is an absolute warrior, but sadly 6 weeks ago we found out that the cancer has spread to her brain. The harsh chemicals she has had no choice but to pump into her body to attack the cancer has left her weakened and has damaged her mind and body in ways that can never be fixed. It has meant that options to tackle the brain tumours, like radiotherapy, have been taken away. I have felt utterly helpless watching my mum fight over the last 20 months. Cancer has no particular preference for its victim, and no one knows who it will possess next; we can only keep on learning and seeking new ways to get one step ahead of it. I want us to advance science to find new treatment paths that don’t leave victims with long term damage both mentally and physically. This is why I’m doing 100 squats a day in November for Stand Up To Cancer to help fund life-saving research. It feels small but it’s something I can do.
