Recent developments in Corrective services, Silverwater prison show a step in the right direction towards officer safety when aiming to gain immediate control of a situation. A three-ponged safety response plan allows for effective resource allocation, focused training, responses to be scaled according to the severity of an emergency, clear communication and adaptability. In a real life situation, it is priority to control a situation as quickly as possible however this isn’t always reality in correctional environments due to multiple factors. I can speak from my own experience, a riot situation can go from 0-100 in seconds, it then can take hours before the entire incident is controlled and over, especially when following emergency response procedures, balancing officer safety, surrounding inmate safety and asset protection is paramount. I hope this new approach is followed by other effective response plans and perhaps updated concept/site planning leading to a safer layout in correctional environments which put officer safety at the forefront of any situation.
