The Capital Region Planning Commission (CRPC) is continuing the development of VisionGreen 2050. It is a plan to reduce climate pollution in the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area (Baton Rouge MSA), and is funded by a grant from the federal government. Franklin Associates is leading the outreach efforts for CRPC to gain feedback on climate pollution in the Baton Rouge MSA. Complete this short questionnaire to provide feedback about climate pollution reduction planning in your area at this link: https://lnkd.in/etuJWDkf.

Water is a valuable resource and with the impact of climate change, we can no longer assess its management from one lens. Water management in our built environment must include climate change impacts, existing building and urban storm-water infrastructure, water-conserving fixtures, technology infusion and human behavior all at once. ? Here's some insights I wrote down on responsible water management: https://lnkd.in/dG-mvQkb

?? Advancing Sustainability: Federal Grants for Tribal Nations and Energy Independence The recent $300 million in grants announced by the Biden-Harris Administration marks a significant step in supporting tribal nations and U.S. territories in their fight against climate change. These funds will enable communities to cut climate pollution, improve energy resilience, and adopt renewable energy solutions. For many remote and underserved areas, this funding can accelerate the shift to clean energy by promoting grid-independent technologies. The ability to harness renewable power through microgrid solutions and innovative systems like mobile EV charging units can drastically reduce reliance on traditional power grids and fossil fuels. This initiative is not only about reducing emissions but empowering communities to build a resilient, sustainable energy future. Explore how our mobile EV charging skids function as versatile microgrid solutions, delivering reliable power wherever it's needed. To equitably address #ClimateChange, the Climate Protection Program must listen to environmental justice communities and invest in us. EJ communities face higher costs for utilities, worse air quality, and worse health outcomes. They're made up of people of color and low-income families who experience climate change first and worst. Right now, part of the Climate Protection Program that empowers and invests in EJ communities is under attack. Check out the new Climate Protection Program website to learn more and sign the petition: https://lnkd.in/gkrrdTTv The Climate Protection Program is a priority of Unite Oregon, Verde, Beyond Toxics, PCUN, and NEIGHBORS FOR CLEAN AIR.

New paper alert! How effective is freshwater wetland restoration to mitigate climate change?? ? Our #tealcarbon team conducted a global meta-analysis to evaluate the climate benefits of wetland restoration and explore the time it takes for them to have a net radiative cooling effect on the climate.? ?? We found that most restored wetlands become net #carbonsinks within 5 years of restoration. ? However, because it takes between 100-500 years for restored freshwater wetlands to have a net cooling effect on the climate, they are unlikely to play a key role in stabilizing global temperature before 2100 (Paris Agreement timeframe). ? As a result, this study highlights that the conservation and protection of natural freshwater wetlands is the most effective short-term strategy to ensure their climate cooling effects. ? This research was led by BlueCarbonLab researcher Dr Lukas Schuster, with fellow scientists Dr Pierre Taillardat, Prof Peter Macreadie and Dr Martino E. Malerba. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the International Day of Forests on March 21, 2012 to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of forests to the health of our planet. ? By the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it for growth, forests will significantly contribute to climate mitigation. In addition, forest watersheds and wetlands are crucial to the public drinking water systems by providing 75% of the world’s accessible freshwater. The new Forest Service research report has revealed that Aspen is 90% dependent on National Forest watersheds alone, for their drinking water. Also, Los Angeles receives more than two-thirds of their water from the forestlands in California and Colorado.?

Lots of important nuances highlighted here! While the importance of restoration is highlighted, the even greater importance and significance of protecting and maintaining existing wetlands is key!
