All colleges receiving federal funding should be required to provide adequate basic needs services and those services should receive government funding. Period. Please join me in the fight to make it happen. Why? It’s Thursday. Here’s what my students experienced just THIS WEEK: (1) A mom with a 10 year old found herself homeless after the sudden death of her fiancé. (2) A mom with a toddler who is also caring for her grandparent witnessed the murder of her brother. (3) A dad with a 15 year old experienced the stillborn birth of his second child. All 3 students are in programs focused on high-demand, high-wage credentials. I’ve got 5 other students who are struggling with rent, 4 who can’t find jobs, and 3 others dealing with significant illnesses. Teaching in today’s world requires empathy and compassion- and also *services.* I’m grateful that in every case I’ve been able to make a substantive referral for support at Community College of Philadelphia. At the same time, I know those services are understaffed and underfunded. And that’s by design. We are doing far more with far less, with students who will experience the greatest ROI if only they reach the finish line. Invest in #communitycolleges. Invest in #basicneeds supports. Take #RealCollege students and their lives seriously. Our futures depend on theirs- and their futures depend on our decisions. Instead, it’s about listening, learning, and building relationships—being quiet and understanding the community’s needs before advocating for change. ... Desegregation begins with showing up, but integration is about how we engage once we’re there. Authentic participation is key, whether through PTA meetings, school site councils, or advocating for district policies that reflect the true needs of the community. ... Advocacy can start small, but the goal is to grow it into collective action that benefits all students. ... Today is the second annual #DayOfTheHomeschooledChild. You likely know someone who is homeschooled. But they may not be open about it. Here’s why. For some homeschooled students, it is a time of having a flexible learning environment, curriculum that is tailored to our learning styles, and lots of individual attention from our parents. For other homeschooled students, it is a time of being neglected, ignored, and abused. Worse, over 200 children have lost their lives due to abuse in homeschooling environments. It doesn’t have to be this way. The Coalition for Responsible Home Education is working to protect homeschooled children. CRHE conducts research, advocates for evidence-based policy, and develops resources for the success of parents and children. We are wearing green today in support of homeschooled children. Green symbolizes youth, and the vibrant lives homeschooled children should be able to live. Children have rights. Parents have responsibilities. (And apologies: didn’t get my nails done this year. ??)

I need your attention for a moment—this is really important. Imagine knowing your child isn’t getting the same opportunities as other kids, simply because they go to a charter school. That’s the reality we’re facing right here in Rochester. Charter schools only receive $0.58 for every $1.00 given to traditional public schools. This means fewer resources, fewer opportunities, and fewer chances for our kids to reach their full potential. We can’t let this slide. Our kids deserve better. They deserve the same chances, the same support, and the same future as anyone else. As Teddy sat attentively, the children’s imaginations set the classroom aglow, fostering a sense of belonging through the universal language of storytelling. The act of sharing stories is more than just an educational tool; it’s a way to weave the fabric of community, to instill empathy, and to ignite a lifelong love for reading. We’re not just teaching literacy; we’re nurturing future leaders who understand the value of giving back. Halfway into a successful 5-yr school reform project, the School District of Lancaster, PA lost significant state and federal funding. Working with the district's Communications Director #KeithPierce, #EdBuffman and I wrote and directed this award-winning PSA to bring attention to the inequities in PA state school funding, and to rally the community around the school district. Lancaster remained committed to school reform, even though the district had to raise taxes, and even helped elect Governor Rendell, who picked Lancaster Schools' Superintendent #VickiPhillips to head his Education Department, promising school reform. But nothing changed in Harrisburg's school funding formula then--or in the next years--until now. Now, Pennsylvania courts have finally declared that the way PA funds public schools is unconstitutional, because the quality of students’ education is determined by their zip code (and local property taxes).?Now, lawmakers in Harrisburg are debating a historic $1.8 billion increase for public schools as a first step toward delivering on the promise of a great education for every child. We’ve just released the Eos Foundation’s 2023/24 school breakfast report card, Ending Hunger in Our Classrooms: Expanding After the Bell Breakfast to Fuel Student Learning, and the findings are disturbing: Just 48% of kids enrolled in the Commonwealth’s high-poverty K-12 schools are getting the free breakfast they need—and are entitled to. The reason??Too few schools offer Breakfast After the Bell programs, where breakfast is served to all students after the start of the instructional day. Most serve breakfast in the cafeteria before classes begin, making it difficult for many students to access. The message is clear: Universal free breakfast, after the bell and in the classroom, is the single greatest opportunity to reduce child hunger in our state, removing the stigma and encouraging all students to break bread together! In fact, our study showed how, by switching to the after-the-bell model, schools could increase breakfast participation rates to 80% or more. For example, Springfield Public Schools provides breakfast after the bell and in the classroom to 85% of students each day. We also found that if all 813 of the state’s high-poverty schools reached 80% of their students with free breakfast, an additional 150,000 students would eat school breakfast each day, and collectively, these schools would receive an additional $67 million in federal U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reimbursements, which is currently being forfeited.
