One of my favorite things about working throughout the years and growing not only my knowledge base of the overall industry and the effect that various aspects have on each other is the direct effect that management has on morale and the effect morale has on production, quality, and safety. We can get into cost, supply chain, demand, overall reduction in operating cost, etc. But the true importance of cost lies within the people, culture, morale, and the overall perception of the team. Terrible morale will cost you everything. Failing to listen to individuals working with you will cost you everything. Ego blindness is a real thing. Ego causes individuals to focus on just themselves being right, not the entirety of the project as a whole. There is always give and take in every situation. Civilization was founded on this very basic core value. I am enthusiastic about the impact I am able to have on an employees vision of a company from the second they apply to the point of that individuals boots hitting a jobsite. I am proud to have teams meetings with the HR team trying to get things right even down to the verbiage used while speaking with potential new hires. Proud to go and educate the training department on what certs would be needed for these individuals to even be allowed to step foot on site and why. Proud to take time with safety so they are able to truly grasp the concept of how things are being constructed and why. Proud to set aside production hours to bring in crews completing the work in order to inform Quality of what works and what does not work in the SOP provided. Proud to visit the field regularly getting out with composite toe boots and rigging the block, setting a base section, or flagging a crane, etc. More importantly I am happy with a team who understands the importance of this. People work hard for people they know work hard. That is the bottom line. I could have came to work dressed nice and act almost allergic to mud. My position never required me to get dirty as I did in the field. I choose to. And always will. Being someone who focuses on impressing solely those above you will get you nowhere. A man without an army that respects him is just that. A man working alone. Engaging in the people beneath you and continually working on making things better for them is the key. Every kingdom starts off as a village. Never lose the respect of that village. #ittakesavillagetoraiseacorporation #throwback

If you are an employer or supervisor I write this today for you to think about. I managed small to very large staffs for most of my career and I am sharing this with you to give insight on how to treat your subordinates. First of all the Bible says this: “In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” - Matthew 7:12 Do you know the story of the famous American racehorse, Seabiscuit? It’s an inspiring story, and also a fascinating glimpse at American social history during the 1930s where these horses were treated far better than the jockeys who rode them. The jockeys were paid very little and given poor housing, jockeys worked in one of the most dangerous professions at the time without any kind of medical care. And I thought to myself, “What a great example of what Scripture is talking about, when it refers to unjust and unfair behavior towards those God has entrusted to our authority.” The words of Jesus could not be clearer. We are to be fair. But it doesn’t just mean adequate pay and benefits. The employer must treat employees fairly, and that fairness extends much further than just pay and benefits. It also means not showing partiality, being respectful, being honest and treating them with integrity. What does that mean? Well, look at it this way. If you’ve ever seen a situation where a parent shows favoritism to one child over another, you know how incredibly demoralizing it can be to the entire home. There’s no sense of harmony and health. It works the same way in the workplace. Think of the demoralizing effect partiality has on employees. It’s the perfect place for Jesus’ golden rule to be applied - do unto others as you would have them do unto you. What would happen if supervisors treated employees and supervisors approached each other in this way? Morale would soar, productivity would increase, and profits would rise. Because the good owner of Seabiscuit actually treated his jockey in this way, Seabiscuit’s success is an inspiring story even today! I challenge you today to take a look at how you treat people that report you - it might give you some insight on why you have turn over in staff and they have low morale. If you discover this in your organization you have an obligation to change that culture and fix it. Be Blessed

We caught up with Emmajean Evans who has recently joined the Rio Tinto Robe Valley team to find out more about her experiences and most importantly, Emmajean’s ‘why’. What is your role and how long have you been with the business? I am a Robe River Kuruma woman, and I have lived in the Pilbara all my life. I began my journey with Rio Tinto in October 2023 as Capability Development Advisor and then changed roles in June to an Indigenous Support Advisor. The change was actually pretty good for me as I love helping people and interacting with employees, I was excited to get to know them better and build relationships along with their leaders. I did find a few of the challenges since beginning but my main one was understanding all of the acronyms! How are you finding your role? I get to meet new starters to the business and get to know them and find out about their interests and hobbies and I get to work with people from other departments, learning what they do and getting to know them better as people which I really enjoy. What is the most rewarding part of your role? The most rewarding moment would be every moment that is spent helping people, having a yarn, and having that person or a group of people celebrate their success because they achieved one of their goals. How do you cope with being on site away from your family on a roster? Being away from home is difficult but we had a ‘My why?’ poster come out this year. ‘My why’ is a way of reminding you of your reasons you go to work, and need come home safely, My why are my family, because I have a very large family and they are my support and are the reason I am where I am today. I know they will always be one phone call away when I need them. How do you decompress during your off-roster time? My rostered days off are spent with my family, watching tv/movies, playing video games, going to the beach and travelling around the Pilbara. I want to spend every moment with my family before I go back to work and do it all again. Family milestones are a big one for us for example we had my father’s 50th and brother in law’s 40th birthday earlier this year and we have a few more before the end of this year and next year to look forward to. Where do you see yourself in five years? In five years, I see myself building stronger relationships, becoming a homeowner and travelling overseas.
