At the #UNGA79, world leaders are set to confront a deepening crisis in Africa’s education system: 9 out of 10 African children are unable to read for meaning by the age of 10. The urgent need to address Africa’s education gap will be at the centre. https://lnkd.in/ds9V7BsS #UNGA79 #UNGA2024 #GlobalChallenges #YearofEducation #Agenda2063 #ReadWriteCount #FoundationalLearning #DataForFoundationalLearning #SDGs #EvidenceBasedEducation

"Does the current educational system across the African continent help children change their lives and those of their families?" "Does our educational system produce learners with the skills and potential to create jobs needed for economic growth and development?" "Or is our educational system only good at producing job-seekers?" The answers to these questions should guide us as a continent to rethink and review our educational system and models.African children deserve an education that empowers them to change the harsh socio-economic realities they face. They need educational outcomes that will serve as the weapon to transform Africa's struggling economy. As the Child Rights Network for Southern Africa, we urge the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, together with AU members, to invest in educational policies and programs. Invest in systems that integrate technical skills like engineering, mining, and agriculture with academic subjects from primary education to tertiary levels. We further urge AU member states to invest in school infrastructure, equipment, resources, and tools that promote inclusive quality education. Through well-resourced, inclusive quality education, children across the continent can change their lives and improve our economy. Will you join us in advocating for an educational system that equips African children to transform their futures? Let us reflect on critical questions that shape the future of our children and, by extension, our continent. Youth Decide Zimbabwe (YDZ) stands in solidarity with the African continent and the global community in commemorating Africa Day 2025. This year, we embrace the theme: "Educating an African for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive, Lifelong, Quality, and Relevant Learning in Africa." This theme is not merely a topic for discussion; it is an urgent call to mobilize, a compelling appeal to rekindle the potential of a prosperous future for every young soul that calls this diverse and dynamic continent home. Our history is richly interwoven with the threads of education, which have long united our communities and cultures. In the era of our ancestors, beneath the boundless African heavens, knowledge was imparted from one generation to the next, not within the confines of structured classrooms, but through the profound oral traditions and hands-on teachings of our forebears. Today, we find ourselves at an inflection point where ancestral wisdom intersects with contemporary learning, where informal education evolves into structured systems that are pivotal in unleashing our youth's latent capabilities. Yet, an alarming 60 percent of our adolescents, aged 15 to 17, remain outside the school system, their prospects overshadowed by formidable obstacles. We declare, unequivocally, that the era of inaction has passed! The present moment demands that we tear down these impediments. It is time for every young individual, regardless of gender, to amplify their voice, to assert their educational rights, and to claim the means and chances that will empower them to construct, innovate, and ascend to leadership. Education transcends a mere route to personal success; it is the cornerstone upon which we aspire to erect the Africa of our dreams. An Africa where every child can recline beneath the canopy of an acacia, not solely to absorb the tales of yore, but to compose their own sagas of success and accomplishment. Youth Decide Zimbabwe (YDZ) pledges to be at the forefront of this transformative journey, advocating for robust and inclusive education systems that will illuminate the path to an enlightened and thriving Africa. 'Today, 40% of all Africans are under 15. Another 100 million children will be born here by 2050. With (good) education, young Africans can fuel a colossal powerhouse.' An important part of that power could be the skills, drive and determination to help tackle climate and environmental damage. It is time we all spent more time and money working out how to get good quality education into the parts of the world that have high birth rates and marginalized populations. The sticking plaster approach that has been used to date just isn't cutting it. Classrooms without teachers is not good education, poorly trained and absent teachers in not good education, schools without facilities is not good education. Yet this is exactly the type of education that international donors have been funding, and calling 'education', for decades. It simply isn't good enough, and will not solve the problems that urgently need to be solved. https://lnkd.in/eMX-yuCN

It's inspiring to see the dedication to education highlighted on the Day of the African Child. ChildFund's focus on using education as a catalyst for development in Africa, particularly in Sierra Leone, aligns closely with several key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically: SDG 4.1: This goal aims to ensure that all children, regardless of gender or background, complete free, equitable, and quality primary and secondary education. By targeting education through its programs, ChildFund contributes directly to achieving this goal by improving access to education and enhancing learning outcomes. SDG 4.2: This goal emphasizes the importance of early childhood education and development, ensuring that all children have access to quality early learning experiences that prepare them for primary education. ChildFund's efforts in early childhood development and pre-primary education are crucial in laying a strong foundation for children's educational journeys. SDG 4.6: This goal focuses on ensuring that all youth and a significant proportion of adults achieve literacy and numeracy. By promoting literacy and numeracy skills among both young people and adults, ChildFund contributes to enhancing overall educational attainment and empowering communities through knowledge and skills. By actively pursuing these SDG targets, ChildFund not only supports individual children and youth but also contributes to broader societal development in Sierra Leone and across Africa. Education is indeed a powerful tool for driving positive change, and initiatives like those led by ChildFund are crucial in realizing the vision of inclusive and quality education for all. #DayofTheAfricanChild #DayofTheAfricanChild2024 #Education ##EducationForAll #EducationForAllChildrenInAfrica #Africa #SierraLeone #DAC #DAC2024

I’ve been taking some time to reflect on our #UNGA79 experience. With the world as it is, you could feel the political tension in the air engulfing everything in NY. That only confirmed the gut feeling that we cannot let the biggest development challenges of our times band forgotten. But even as conversations about #health, #climate and #nutrition were alive with engagement, #education was not at the forefront of key political discussions this year. This is a hard nut to crack. ??#Education may not feel as urgent as healthcare, but it is in fact life support for the least to the most privileged. ??It is a vaccine against helplessness in a changing and evolving world and labor markets shaped by climate change and digital transformation. ??As gender inequalities worsen around the world, #education can fuel the internal and external transformations that are the antidote to systemic oppressions like the patriarchy. We tried to bring the urgency and aliveness and vibrancy of the education discourse to New York as the Global Partnership for Education worked with the African Union and Human Capital Africa to commemorate 2024 as the AU Year of Education. (Read more about it at the link below!) I guess I was looking for #hope when we went to New York. And hope was what we had in the room with this big event. But hope is only the beginning. Now we need a movement. Stay tuned to #FundEducation campaign with the Global Partnership for Education.

Championing Girls' Education: Insights from Aflatoun’s Impactful Session at the Pan-African Conference We received enthusiastic feedback from last week’s 1st Pan-African Conference on Girls' and Women’s Education in Africa, held at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The conference, titled "Prioritizing Girls' and Women’s Education: A Strategy for Increased Access to Inclusive, Lifelong Quality and Relevant Learning in Africa," focused on enhancing educational opportunities for girls and women across the continent. Aflatoun International led a session titled “Economic Empowerment of Girls through Social and Financial Education: A Path to Inclusive Learning and Sustainable Development.” Panelists Sengoma Hajara, Bemnet Zerehun, Grace Awawu Saba, and Mercy Luhanga Mchechu discussed the key components of social and financial education, shared field experiences on how these programs empower girls, and highlighted the importance of collaboration between schools, governments, and communities. Notably, Bmnet Zerihun, an 18-year-old participating in social and financial skills building activities by FHIDO and ChildFund Ethiopia, shared her story of empowerment through the Aflatoun program. She emphasized the program’s role in equipping her with essential social and financial skills. Bmnet has positively impacted her peers by sharing her knowledge, promoting saving and responsible spending, and participating in social and financial enterprises. Key recommendations from the session to further economically empower girls through education include: >Integration into School Curricula: National integration of social and financial education into school curricula is essential to ensure that vulnerable children and young people benefit from these crucial skills. >Teacher Training: Comprehensive training programs for teachers are needed to effectively deliver social and financial education using child-centred learning methodologies, thereby empowering children and young people. >Multi-Sectoral Collaboration: A collaborative approach involving government bodies, civil society organizations, educators, and the private sector is vital for empowering children and young people with social and financial education. We are committed to driving inclusive, lifelong quality learning for girls across Africa! Happy Children's Day! ?? This year, we celebrate with the theme: "For every child, every right." Every child deserves the right to quality education, yet millions are still deprived of this essential opportunity. According to UNESCO, in Sub-Saharan Africa, 258 million children and adolescents are out of school, and in Nigeria alone, over 10 million children remain unenrolled. This staggering statistic highlights the urgent need for action. To ensure every child's right to quality education and a brighter future, we must: 1??Increase funding for education: Governments and international organizations must prioritize and allocate more resources to the education sector. 2??Build and improve infrastructure: Safe, well-equipped schools are essential for effective learning. 3??Train and support teachers: Qualified and motivated educators are crucial for delivering quality education. 4??Promote inclusive education: Ensure all children, including girls, children with disabilities, and marginalized groups, have equal access to learning opportunities. Let's come together to uphold the rights of every child and build a future where education is a reality for all. #ChildrensDay2024 #ForEveryChildEveryRight #RightToEducation #UNESCO #EducationForAll

#AkumActForEducation CAMPAIGN WEEK 1 : QUALITY AND INFRASTRUCTURE [Out-of-School Children in Africa] By 2050, one-third of all children aged 6 to 15 will live in sub-Saharan Africa, up from one in five today (UNESCO, 2022). Africa is home to 40% of the world’s out-of-school children, with 98 million lacking access to primary and secondary education as of 2023 (UNESCO). To tackle this issue, Akuma recommends : -Expanding initiatives to train and hire more teachers, especially in rural and underserved areas, to address the educator shortage in sub-Saharan Africa. -Prioritizing electrification of schools and improve basic infrastructure to ensure conducive learning environments, especially in primary education. -Collaborating with private organizations to close the education funding gap, focusing on long-term support for teacher training, resources, and technology. -Leveraging technology to enhance equity, quality, and resilience.
