Let's look back on the world's most famous Wicker basket. The earliest Fortnum's hampers were fondly known as travellers baskets and featured fresh food items which could be taken on long carriage journeys and eaten on the go. The growing popularity of picnics in the 18th century established the Fortnum's hamper as an essential element of London society, something summarized by Charles Dickens who famously said look where I will, I see Fortnum and Mason. When Speaking of the Epsom Derby, they've also travelled the globe with the world's great explorers, with records of Fortnum's hampers ascending Mount Everest, the excavation of Tutankhamun's tomb and Shackleton's Antarctic exhibition.
