The Future of Philanthropy is Young! Jeremiah Steen once told me that this is the best world to take risks, to test out new hypotheses for the world's potential, and give that first push to someone's career. How can we do any less than to fully empower young people in every asset of this field? For Elders in the Non-Profit Sector, how are you held accountable by those under 25 within the communities you serve? Are we on your boards? Have we reviewed and approved of the language you use to describe us in your grants? Most importantly, what are you doing to build the trust required to build a world that will honor your legacy?

I've been in a bit of a startup bubble ?? the last few years, so last night it was refreshing to be immersed in a new community, filled with fresh faces and ideas (courtesy of Queensland Gives by Queensland Community Foundation). There's something special about being in a room surrounded by people who selflessly dedicate so much of their time and energy to helping support others and the environment. I've been thinking a lot recently about where there are potential intersections between the approach and focus of #NFPs and the world of #startups and #venturecapital. While many would probably see them as 'chalk and cheese' (one focused on financial returns at all costs, while the other forgoes financial gain altogether), they share quite a few common traits: 1?? Commonly inspired by a personal experience of the founder 2?? A vision for a better way/ better future and a fierce passion for making this change while others might be ok with the status quo 3?? Require entrepreneurial spirit and smarts to start and survive I think these common traits make them ripe for more collaboration and sharing of insights, yet it's quite rare to see Australian tech startups partnering meaningfully with not-for-profits who share similar goals or values. Why is this? ?? I'd love to know more about examples of this happening. If exploring how the NFP/ philanthropy world can better partner and intersect with the startup/ VC world tickles your fancy, I'd love to hear from you! ??

During a Zoom meeting with some association professionals last week, I proposed that associations perform a competitive analysis to identify competitors to associations for sponsors and members. One association executive said, “we would conduct a competitive analysis, however, our association doesn’t have any competitors.” The first paragraph of this ASAE: The Center for Association Leadership article sheds light on why this association executive is probably overlooking potential competitors to her association. Southern Pines Brewing Company is proud to announce that, over past nine months, we have raised a total of?$4,111.38?for a variety of local nonprofit organizations (one per month). The funds, collected through an option to round-up on tabs, will go toward the mission of each individual nonprofit including: The Boys & Girls Club, Special Forces Charitable Trust, Caring Hearts for Canines, Habitat for Humanity, Sleep in Heavenly Peace Sandhills Chapter, Duskin Stephens Foundation, Friend to Friend, Children of Fallen Heroes, and The Mira Foundation. “We are so grateful for the generosity of our customers,” said owner Micah Niebauer, “Every bit adds up. Something as simple as rounding up a tab can go a long way for many of these organizations.” Staying local was important to us when partnering with organizations as it aligns with the brewery’s mission statement of fostering community. Looking ahead, SPBC is committed to continuing its charitable efforts, with plans for additional fundraising initiatives in the coming months.
