New Research Programme Supporting Veterans' Transitions At The University of Queensland, we are delivering a new intervention to assist veterans in navigating the often challenging transition from military to civilian life. Our Veteran Connection Programme focuses on improving adjustment, addressing the loss of military identity, and enhancing well-being. We've already received positive feedback from ex-Clearance Divers of the Royal Australian Navy, with early results showing improved reintegration and reduced loneliness. Intervention overview: - Objective: Support military-civilian transitions - Format: Hybrid (online & face-to-face) - Commitment: Two face-to-face sessions at St Lucia, Brisbane (~3 hours each); one online session (1 hour); two brief surveys (10 minutes each); and one online interview (1 hour). - Timing: early November - Compensation: a $200 gift card for every participant Interested in learning more or know someone who would benefit? Every day, brave military personnel defend our freedom, yet many face hunger. In fact, 1 in 4 active-duty service members (or 24% of active-duty service members) were food insecure in 2020. Service members often experience unique challenges making it difficult to access the food they need to thrive, from limited income to high cost-of-living and other financial commitments. Additionally, service members often are required to move from base to base, making it difficult for spouses to maintain consistent work. This leaves the family to rely on the single income of the service member. While many military members and their families face hunger, very few qualify for federal food assistance programs. The St. Louis Area Foodbank is committed to making it easier for military families to get access to the food they need. We are investing in collaborative partnerships with military-focused nonprofits and organizations to advocate for federal policy support. We are also creating food distribution events focused on assisting active-duty military personnel and veterans. Learn more about how you can help at https://lnkd.in/gmceMAji. Feeding America RTX

We've been collaborating with the fantastic team at The Royal Naval Benevolent Trust, which provides critical financial support to Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel and their dependents. Working together, we've transformed their grant application process via the Lightning Reach portal to enable them to get more support out to those who need it. Together, here's what we've achieved ?? ? Faster processing: grant decisions have been brought down to just 1-2 days, so individuals get the support they need quicker. ? Secure data handling: sensitive applicant information is securely stored within the portal, minimising any risk to individuals' data. ? ? Better financial insights: our open banking feature helps RNBT quickly and effectively assess applicants' financial situations, removing time-consuming manual reviews. ? Reaching new demographics: through the portal, RNBT now reaches younger applicants and those in vulnerable situations like domestic violence. Interested in seeing how we can work together to improve your organisations processes? We'd love to hear from you on [email protected] Read more about our collaboration here ?? https://lnkd.in/de6fCeCs #GrantMaking #DigitalTransformation #OpenBanking

AEP Lecturer in Defence Studies, King's College London | Anglo-Japanese Grand Strategy post-1945 and British Defence and Security
Whilst I'd never dismiss National Service ideas - of various types - out of hand, if we put aside the ideological and cultural questions about returning to a National Service model for the UK, the numbers do not appear to currently add up. The Home Secretary James Cleverly argues this morning that the plan - both the one-year military service and the 'volunteer' (if one can call a National Service model that!) choice on weekends for public service roles - is fully costed with an earmarked £2.5bn. How one is meant to train, feed, house and equip an additional 30,000 military personnel - on top of the training for the 'volunteers' - when the MoD is currently experiencing a reported £10bn blackhole in their budget seems...uncertain. And that is before we talk about pulling a significant number of regular armed forces personnel away to boost instructor numbers for the annual cohorts of mandatory year-service. https://lnkd.in/e24mA8hB

I understand the value of higher education. I went to North Carolina State University on a full academic scholarship. Without it, I would have come out of school with over $100K in debt. Even with my scholarship, I worked all 4 years to cover my expenses. I was incredibly fortunate to only have #debt from my graduate school education. And it took me over 10 years to pay that off. I now have a 5 year old daughter and a husband who is retired from the military on 100% #disability. We elected to make our permanent residence in Virginia BECAUSE of VMSDEP. We have saved for our daughter's college education, but with inflation, it is estimated that a 4-year degree from an in-state institution will cost over $140,000 by the time she enrolls in 2037 (https://lnkd.in/eZA-qU8e). We don't have that. We won't have that. And, she could take out loans to cover the rest as is suggested by this new plan, except we will never qualify because my husband's disability benefit has to be counted as income. I want our college and university systems to thrive. I understand how expensive that education system is to provide. But the answer is NOT to take away one of the most significant financial benefits of being a VA state resident from our service men, women, and their families. Please help me in protecting this earned benefit for my daughter and for all of the other military families who value education but will not be able to afford if if this passes. #vmsdep #militaryfamily #disabledveteran #veteran #military
?? ATTENTION VIRGINIA STATE RESIDENTS & MILITARY PERSONNEL ?? Problem: If you are not already tracking, major changes have been proposed to the Virginia Veteran's benefits which are currently outlined as: "Virginia’s Military Survivor and Dependent Education Program provides a tuition waiver to spouses and children of veterans who are killed, missing in action, taken prisoner or at least 90% permanently disabled as a result of military service or combat. The program also provides up to a $2,200 annual stipend to offset the costs of room, board, books and supplies for qualified survivors and dependents of military service members." Additional information: If passed, the new bill, SB347 https://lnkd.in/es-BhtNg is set to take action this summer. HB30 4-5.01#2c https://lnkd.in/gr4WjYMR Implication: For any qualifying dependent of a service member who has been injured, is missing, is KIA, or is otherwise severely disabled in the line if duty, if this bill passes, you are about to lose the tuition assistance you and your children currently qualify for as early as this summer. Please write to Governor Glenn Youngkin and local officials to demand that he veto this provision. Glenn Youngkin: My brothers and sisters in uniform did not die or become disabled so their own government can take away benefits to their surviving family members. They fulfilled their jobs with honor, and their families deserve to be taken care of. Fulfill your duty as a public servant and take care of our people.
