Meanwhile, #Europe’s #steelmaking industry is on the cusp of disruptive, #technological change: #cleansteel produced using an #innovative process of solid-state #directreduction, driven by ‘green’ #hydrogen made from water molecules split by #renewable #electricity. This new technology can slash a steel mill’s hazardous #emissions and convert its primary exhaust from #carbondioxide to #steam. But for America’s #steelmills to join the emerging clean #steel economy — and future-proof their quality union jobs — they first need a plan. This report presents a comprehensive transition plan for Cleveland-Cliffs Dearborn Works that lays out all key steps needed to decarbonize the steel mill’s #operations: first, replacing the mill’s #blastfurnace and basic oxygen furnaces (#BOFs) with, respectively, a direct reduction (#DRI) furnace and set of electric arc furnaces (#EAFs) at an estimated cost of $1.57 billion; second, #electrifying all of the steel mill’s #finishing operations, and supplying all needed #electricity from new #solar and #wind. In parallel, Michigan needs to identify an owner-operator for a #greenhydrogen #plant (estimated as 1300 MW, costing a minimum of $2.6 billion) and must work with DTE Energy and #MISO to construct the new #renewables generating, #storage, and #transmission assets needed to #supply the #steelmill and #hydrogenplant — estimated as a minimum of 2 GW solar and 2 GW wind, as well as #battery electric and hydrogen storage needs, depending on hydrogen plant design. Molten Industries is spearheading a groundbreaking strategic partnership with several key industry players. United States Steel Corporation and CPFD Software to design, build, and test a pilot-scale system aimed at eliminating carbon emissions from iron reduction. This ambitious project is supported by a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) $5.4M grant. The primary goal of the project is to showcase the integration of methane-pyrolysis-driven hydrogen production with a pilot direct reduced iron (DRI) shaft furnace at Molten's facility. Molten's technology utilizes renewable electricity to decompose methane from natural gas or waste sources into hydrogen gas and solid graphite. This process achieves a 75% reduction in energy intensity compared to water electrolysis, an alternative method for producing zero-carbon hydrogen. "This collaboration with U. S. Steel and CPFD Software is an exciting first step in Molten’s mission to decarbonize the world’s heavy industries. Our process delivers hydrogen at high temperatures required for ironmaking and steelmaking, saving energy and cost for steel manufacturers. We’re excited to reveal that Slovenia’s largest operating coal mine has become the latest mine in mainland Europe to investigate Gravitricity Ltd’s underground energy storage. The Velenje mine in northeastern Slovenia is currently a fully operational lignite mine, with six working shafts and more than 1,600 mine employees. The mine operators Premogovnik Velenje have now commissioned a feasibility study to examine how our GraviStore technology could offer a low carbon future as the mine winds down operations in the 2030s. High-level calculations for the potential for Hydrogen storage using our H2FlexiStore technology are also included in the study. Our engineers have already visited the site to assess the technical feasibility of installing our systems in two specific shafts, one of which is a ventilation shaft which may become available for a potential pilot project, which could start as early as next year. Gravitricity's Engineering Project Manager Nigel Voaden said: “The Velenje mine could be very well suited to future energy storage schemes as the operational shafts are both deep and in excellent condition and we are grateful to the mine’s operators for commissioning this study. ?? Form Energy Uses Battery Tech to Clean Up Iron and Steel Form Energy, known for its innovative iron-air battery, is now setting its sights on revolutionizing the iron and steel industry. This startup, founded in 2017, initially aimed to create affordable, long-duration energy storage. However, during its development, Form Energy discovered a method to produce low-carbon iron using its battery technology, which could significantly reduce carbon emissions in steel production. ?? Form Energy’s battery works by converting rust to pure iron during charging and oxidizing it again to discharge electricity. This unique process led to the realization that iron could be prepared using electricity instead of the traditional high-heat, fossil fuel-dependent methods. ?? Steel production is responsible for approximately 9% of global carbon emissions, largely due to the traditional methods of preparing iron ores. Currently, steel is produced by heating iron ore in blast furnaces with limestone and coke or by using direct reduced iron (DRI) techniques with fossil gas. Both methods emit significant greenhouse gases. ??? The process still requires significant energy, as breaking the bonds between iron and oxygen is inherently energy-intensive. However, Form aims to integrate its system with renewable energy sources to mitigate this issue. If successful, the process could make green iron production viable at competitive costs, even with today’s electricity prices. ? #ClientNews Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Infrastructure Office announced a $22.2M investment to advance the Midwest Alliance for Clean Hydrogen hub, also known as MachH2, thanks to funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. With production facilities Ypsilanti, Detroit and Flint, the funding will advance the next phase of planning and development of regional supply chains for the creation, distribution and use of clean hydrogen for public transit, trucking and industrial use. MachH2 is anticipated to create 12,000 direct jobs and catalyze further growth and economic opportunities in the developing hydrogen sector.
