What happened at Journeyman lately??? For context: at Journeyman we place highly skilled tradespeople (think Carpenters, Woodworkers etc) from Europe with partner companies in the US, Canada, NZ and Australia ???????? ???????????????? ???? ??????: - We grew the team from 2 to 5 team members profitably - We've placed more than 150 people abroad last year - We did just over 500k revenues in our full first year of operations post covid with a solid 20%+ EBITDA margin - we really niched down on #luxury home builders as our ICP: they're fun to work for our talents (they love building cool shit), they are less affected by changes in the economy (the rich keep buying awesome houses) and they love the kind of quality tradespeople from Europe we can provide ?? - We #automated the s*** out of as many manual & repetitive processes as possible so my team can focus on doing interesting things (work in progress though) ????????'?? ???????????? ?????? ????????: - Beat the 1 Mio. in revenues while maintaining our EBITDA margin - Keep the cancellation rate <10% (cancellation rate = rate of candidates quitting their jobs before their term ist up) ?????? ???????? ??????????????????????: I want to keep having fun building Journeyman and for our tradespeople to have awesome adventures abroad - in the end, that's what we're doing this for!

Today we highlight Mike Serina, Sr. Foreman! 1. What is your role at M.J. Nester? My role here at M.J Nester is to teach and instill pride into our craft in this field of work. As Head Foreman, I want the hardworking crews to be safe, enjoy what they do, and take pride in what the can accomplish if they put their minds to it. This is a trade where variables and having a mind outside of the box allows you to be creative and challenged everyday in a new way. 2. How long have you been with M.J. Nester? I been with the company before it had a name. It was an oral agreement with Bryan over the phone that I would join him to build something special and change the industry 3. How long have you worked in the construction industry or related industries? Since 15 , My father and my Mom's Father, they taught me how to work with mechanical, Woodworking , and taught work ethic. As my Dad always said , Your Pride and Craftsmanship is something no can ever take away from you, but it will define you! 4. What is your favorite part about working for M.J. Nester? Best part of working for M.J Nester, knowing you have an owner that doesn't rollover no matter what variables are thrown our way. From variables on a jobsite, to being challenged by a virus that hit our society. He puts the choices in our hands, and runs with us to get to the finish line. During covid, he fought and hustled day and night to keep us employed , he didn't take the easy road. Nice having someone in your corner when times get tough. 5. Tell us about your favorite project you have worked on so far with M.J. Nester? Best project so far...easy one...New Jersey... During covid, Company was young, and we really didn't have a shop yet. But we installed an EPA scrubbing system , and a huge cantilever! Bryan, Nick and I, and other guys coming in and out, built this unit in a Bryan's garage! And moved it with an old Ford Tractor! Thought he was nuts.... and we installed a stack with a JLG LALL... Soo many variables, from Covid, weather, mud, cold, heights, new crew members, this was a good foundation for us to build off of. And the old Dually with a rusted bed worked her butt of getting everything to site...Great project! That Cantilever looked amazing up on the roof. Q: How long have you been working for Thompson Arthur, and how long have you been working in construction? ?? 29 years at Thompson Arthur, and I've been working in construction since I was 13 years old. Q: What do you like most about working at Thompson Arthur? ?? There are a lot of good people here. And the paycheck keeps the lights on. Q: What are some of the toughest challenges you've had at work? ?? On large jobsites, such as the one I am currently working on, it is sometimes difficult to be and stay productive with literally thousands of other workers on the jobsite. All while maintaining the specific requirements set by the customer. Q: What do you feel is a priority for our company? ?? Safety is number one, but after that we are focused on quality, experienced employees. Q: What is the best advice you could give a new hire at our company? ?? Have and keep a good attitude, put safety first, and be humble enough to take advantage of the opportunity you have been given to learn from the experienced employees around you and you will go far. Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be? ?? The ability to heal sick kids (cancer, etc.). Q: What is your favorite food? ?? Country fried steak with gravy and mashed potatoes. Q: Do you have any nicknames? ?? Green thumb because I like to grow a garden. Q: If you could have an unlimited supply of anything, what would it be? ?? Money so that I could help homeless veterans. Q: Describe yourself in 3 words. ?? Kind, respectful, and responsible. Q: What is the worst job you have ever had? ?? I worked for a cotton mill. My job was tying knots in the threads that broke. This is the biggest hiring mistake I see leaders making in skilled trades ?? They use titles to assume it leads to an outcome. What I find is titles for a position such as laborer or finish carpenter can mean so many different things based on the type of client you're working with or the type of project you're on. What I always recommend is to instead lead with the outcome in mind. Tell them the top three things you need this person to accomplish on a daily basis. For us, internally, that's called the quality, pace, and production. Every position we talk about in the skilled trades boils down to what is your expectation on quality, what is your expectation on production, and what is your expectation on pace? Those 3 things together help to make sure that whoever we present in front of you is focused on executing exactly what you need from them on a daily basis, as opposed to having the right title but not necessarily ready to deliver exactly what you need. A few years ago, this is me leading a toolbox meeting for 60 workers before the daily activities began. For my first construction industry job, I was tasked with supervising the painting of a condominium project. I embraced the challenge, unaware of what the future held. On day one, I was the "newbie", following instructions from the foreman and experienced workers on the site. Fast forward a few weeks to a pivotal meeting. The question of overall site leadership arose. Surrounded by seasoned team members, I never imagined being chosen. But I guess, fate had other plans. I was appointed the overall Project-In-Charge, responsible not only for painting but also for overseeing various construction activities. Am I surprised? Absolutely. Am I nervous? Undoubtedly. Am I scared? Beyond words! Despite my doubts, I accepted the challenge. What began with supervising 10 workers evolved into managing painting and installation activities, material inventory, project scheduling, and collaborating with various stakeholders. Overseeing more than 60 workers daily, the experience was both stressful and incredibly fulfilling. Why? Because I realized that a woman can: ?? Thrive in a male-dominated industry; ?? Gain respect from seasoned professionals and; ?? Lead with confidence despite limited hands-on experience. And this is how I celebrate #internationalwomensday! ????
