The current issue of Conservation Federation, the magazine of the Conservation Federation of Missouri (CFM), is devoted to prairies and other native grasslands. Committee Chair Ronda Burnett and "Missouri's Old-Growth Prairies and Savannas" by MPF Executive Director Carol Davit. Other articles describe the value of native grasslands for hunting and cattle grazing, how to find technical assistance for prairie planting establishment, and more. Together, we can see the forest through the trees-- and collectively, our roots run deep. CSF launches the Forestry Advisory Council to bring together the forest industry and the hunting conservation community to work collaboratively to provide guidance to CSF to inform and advance policies that facilitate active forest management, support a robust forest industry, and improve wildlife habitat and access for sportsmen and women. ? Time is running out for applications for the NatureScot deer management incentive pilot schemes. These schemes are a pilot project looking to assess whether the provision of direct financial support, to those culling red and roe deer, can lead to an increase in the annual culling of these species. ?? Participation in the incentive scheme is open to those holding the legal right, to take or kill deer, on specified land within the Central Scotland Pilot Scheme Areas ?? Participants may live outside the pilot area but must operate within it, on land on which they have the legal right to take or kill deer. ?? All participants must hold Deer Stalking Certificate (DSC) Level 1 (or equivalent) as a minimum requirement. We expect that participants, who are currently only qualified to DSC Level 1, will be working towards DSC Level 2 (or equivalent) through the duration of the pilot scheme. ?? The scheme will not apply to deer culled on the National Forest Estate, or land on which deer management is integral to planning conditions, or to NatureScot staff. California State Parks and partners support giant sequoias with over 900 acres of beneficial fire! … From October 29 to November 1, California State Parks with the assistance of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) and the USDA Forest Service treated 914 acres in the South Grove Natural Preserve at Calaveras Big Trees State Park with prescribed fire. The only cooperative program I know of in the United States where Law Enforcement and Fire come together in the best interest of Public Safety.

California State Parks works diligently to steward its land, often combining wildfire resilience with ecological restoration. Calaveras Big Trees SP is a great example. Ascent recently helped CSP secure approvals of wildfire resilience projects at Mount Diablo SP and Tomales Bay SP using CalVTP.

WHC’s Daniel Goldfarb teamed up with Carmeuse Lime Operations to plant black/jack pine savanna in support of the USDA Forest Service Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, which restores Lake Michigan’s shoreline one tree at a time. This project is one of many seeking to increase micro forests in urban/industrial areas, boosting biodiversity and fighting the climate change crisis.

??The native seedlings we grow are the linchpin of our wildfire restoration projects and a core part of how we’re closing the reforestation gap across the West. Our work in California is no exception. With 635 million seedlings needed to restore California’s burned forests, there couldn’t be a more impactful time for California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to select our nursery, Cal Forest Nurseries, as a 2024 grant recipient! We’re thrilled to share that this funding has already supercharged our operations, supporting the collection and processing of enough seed to grow 100M seedlings. That would be enough to reforest over 300K acres, an area nearly the size of LA.?? With this grant, we’re able to act quickly and efficiently to supply native seedlings to landowners impacted by severe wildfire and restore ecosystems across the Western U.S. that are unlikely to recover without our help. ??
