Good morning my Florida PSM Colleagues, Happy Friday! Pasco County Surveying and Mapping/Geomatics (SAM/G) Division is actively recruiting and seeking an Assistant County Surveyor (ACS), essentially the SAM/G #2 spot in the Org Chart (at least until I retire from the FRS here soon.) I've attached the posting for the advertisement (it will be advertised for more than 2 days, so no worries, I think that may be a type-o.) So check this ad out. Interested? piqued your interest...? Pasco County just completed one of our 2-3 years comparative pay studies and as you may notice, the PSM's, and especially the ACS, have gone through a little pay range and pay band adjustments. We feel the pay range (for initial starting pay - that is the posted salary range) is getting more competitive, not to mention our amazing benefits package, pension, work-life balance, etc. I won't go on and on about those here. Starting pay is not always the base of the range. Based on Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Experience, it can be justified to adjust starting pay a percentage above the base. I believe it says that in the ad. Interested? Let's talk. Let me just say this: I have been pondering and composing the SAM/G Succession Plan, as the Florida Retirement System (FRS) will be kicking me to the curb in a short couple of years. SAM/G requires an ACS to jump in and learn our business and workflows with a vision to advance. QUICK REVISION: what we are looking for is a leader, future leader, someone who enjoys leading, mentoring, and developing up and coming professionals and future leaders, and someone who has leadership on their career advancement agenda. Did I use the word "leader" enough?? asking for a friend. Interest piqued? Then talk to me, I'm actually a pretty cool guy and easy to talk to (at least my mom said I was lol). The surveying industry needs a shift, a big one. We're always talking about why there’s such a shortage of new talent, how we’re struggling to fill the gap as veteran surveyors retire. But maybe we're asking the wrong questions. Instead of just asking, “How do we get people into surveying?”—let's ask,?"Why would someone choose to enter the surveying field today?" When I first started, I was drawn to the thrill of working outdoors, solving boundary puzzles, and providing a service that makes a real impact. But now, running a small survey business, I'm seeing a tougher reality. The opportunities for growth, both financially and professionally, seem to be shrinking. Large companies dominate the big projects, while small operators pick up the small jobs. That middle ground? It’s vanishing fast, leaving little room for smaller firms to build and grow. I’m told I should’ve started my business with major clients already lined up. But with the restrictions around "taking clients with you" and the hurdles of scaling up from scratch, that’s not realistic for most of us trying to break in. And the industry around us—construction, development, even local governments—seems to push away from using licensed surveyors, especially in rural areas. All this while surveyors are working long hours, often without flexibility or growth. If we’re serious about attracting new talent, we need to build an industry where surveyors don’t just find jobs but thrive in careers. We need a space where small businesses can flourish, where surveyors are valued, and where there's a true path to advancement. Our industry needs to be one where expertise and dedication are rewarded, where professionals have the freedom to do the work they love, and where we can pay our people what they’re truly worth. Let’s build a future for surveying that new generations actually want to be part of. #surveyingforthefuture
