Before we get to our regularly scheduled programming...
This week, I joined the team at Handshake after four incredible years at Motive. I’ll really miss my amazing colleagues there. A big thank you to Kirk Okenquist for taking a chance on me as I transitioned from a staffing agency to the world of internal recruiting.
Alright - onwards to our fun fact!
#funfridayfact:
Before the Industrial Revolution, people slept in two phases: a "first sleep" from about 7-8 PM, followed by a waking period of one to two hours, then a "second sleep." This pattern reflected natural human biology, with most individuals experiencing two 3-4 hour sleep cycles and often waking briefly in the night.
However, during the Industrial Revolution, factory owners disrupted this routine by enforcing long work hours, often exceeding 12 hours, which forced workers to skip their second sleep. In the early 1900s, labor unions rallied around the slogan "8 hours work, 8 hours recreation, 8 hours sleep," leading to strikes and protests that ultimately resulted in legislation in 1916.
Thus, the idea of needing "eight hours of sleep" originated not from scientific evidence, but as a catchy rallying cry.
