If you are on the small business/hobbyist side the cost can be relatively low. The best way to reduce cost is to calibrate systems daily and maintenance the machines at least monthly. Also invest in some adhesive or glue sticks for your bed. The biggest factor in printing failure is bed adhesion. There are lots of promotional and pre-sale discounts available for machines and there are always bulk purchase promotions for filament. I purchased my Anycubic Kobra 2 Max retailing at the time for $600 on a Black Friday pre-sale special and spent $480. I also invested in a $30 monthly subscription of 3 rolls, to Numakers, to bring the filament cost down since my post production normally involves sanding and painting.

The material does matter! The machine, infill, support, structural integrity, and how difficult your post production is, is highly dependent on the filament or resin used. Learn each type of material one at a time and perfect your benchies. Troubleshooting future project issues won't be as difficult if you take the time to learn temp, wall, layer height settings, and post production techniques. The material you need for the production of your product is going to be dependent on the temperature control and bed adhesion so make sure if you use PLA or TPU you have the printer ventilating. If using ABS, CF, or other specialty filaments it needs to be hot and consistent in temperature; you will want an enclosure for your printer.

Technology fit is without a doubt the best recommendation to get into AM. The application has to fit for the technology and the materials available. Otherwise you are trying to reinvent the wheel and most likely push for something that would probably be not cost effective.

Before investing in 3D printing, it’s essential to evaluate how it integrates with your current operations. Look ahead for what's to come. Personally I bought an Ender 3 to get the basics down and learn all the different settings and bought a $30 enclosure for a whopping $200 total. I did this to learn all the basics of slicing and settings while also continually doing research on the next big machines that are coming out. I have invested in 3 different brands now Bambu Labs, Creality (Resin and Filament Printers), and Anycubic. By taking my time to learn each software and functions within these I have a great grasp of what's available vs. what can benefit the 3D printer space in the future. Watch Bambu Labs and their AMS systems. Bambu Labs brought this to the forefront but now Creality and Anycubic are starting to keep pace and product match.
