AVC was?delighted?to be invited to?a?focus group?for co-creating a communication toolkit for public consultations within the?framework?of the COMET project (COmmunication and engagement Methods for food safety - new Evidence and Tools) designed by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to?enhance?the effectiveness of public?consultations. To this purpose, EFSA recently organized three sessions with stakeholders where AVC experts Dr Elinor McCartney EU Food Chain Legislation Expert, Mirka Piskorikova and Dr. Rimma Ishimbaeva shared their feedback and?experiences engaging with?EFSA?through public consultations. The following topics were discussed:?? ? Clear indications on the type and form of comments expected ? Way of approaching stakeholders to increase participation ? Reducing time to analyse feedback, contributing to the speed of risk assessment? We believe that our?involvement?in this project, as well as that of colleagues from other stakeholder categories, will help a?better?understanding of interested parties needs and expectations. ?? When it comes to health communication, fear and force is never the solution to inspire social and behavioural change to pick up good practices. Even if it works initially, it's never sustainable. However consistently communicating with factual information as new development arises in data obtained is crucial. Hence in my role as a Risk communicator with the Veterinary Services, providing the public with facts on the subject matter of Food Safety goes without ratting out some harmful practices within the food value chain by some key actors. Regardless of this, acknowledging that everyone has a role to play in food safety and knowing fully well that it is possible to implement good practices for our health and wellbeing when it comes to food and nutrition is what fuels the conversation.
